Re: MakeMKV and AC3
Different people have different needs. Some people run a media center software like SageTV and store many of their movies on the HTPC. They like to do it losslessly so that they can have the movie available without the possibility of damaging the original disc. Plus, storage is very cheap now that y...

Re: MakeMKV and Samsung DNLA TVs (B650 etc)
You won't have any luck with MakeMKV then. This program does not transcode the video. All it does is takes the video and audio losslessly from a DVD or BD and converts it to MKV. For DVD's this is going to be MPEG2 video and most commonly Dolby Digital audio (although it could be DTS or PCM audio de...

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
Ok, that's really strange. What was the size of mkv file (title00.mkv ) that was produced by makemkv? Also, if you run "mkvextract.exe tracks title00.mkv 1:1.m2v 2:2.ac3" you'll get two files - 1.m2v and 2.ac3 . Please post their file sizes too. Thanks. The original file size is 3.1GB. Ru...

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
Ok, here is the mkvinfo for the file. When I pass the file through mkvmerge it says everything went fine but the resulting file is only 81KB in size: mkvmerge v2.9.5 ('Tu es le seul') built on Jun 7 2009 11:07:06 'G:\UNNAMED_DISC\title00.mkv': Using the Matroska demultiplexer. 'G:\UNNAMED_DISC\title...

Re: MakeMKV and AC3
The point of this program is to rip the movie into MKV without any loss in quality. By converting from one lossy format to another you are thereby reducing the quality. There are other programs you can find to convert the audio if you so wish. eac3to can do this for you with minimal hassle.

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
I see there appears to have been a fix in the latest update for my problem. It still hasn't fixed the problem with Mallrats. I realized afterward that I didn't have debug logging turned on. I re-ripped the movie with it enabled. I realize it might not be on the up and up but if there is any way I ca...

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
Just as an aside, I also tried the very same DVD on my Mac Mini in OS X 10.5.7 and the results were identical to the Windows version.

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
As a side note this particular test was performed on Vista x64 on system with AHCI enabled (so no optical drives are actually visible by MakeMKV). I'm using AnyDVD to overcome the limitation with AHCI and accessing the DVD as a hard drive until MakeMKV is fixed to work with drives in that mode. Just...

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
Ok, here is the log from ripping the movie and the output from mkvinfo. Also, I tried playing it in multiple players: Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic Homecinema and VLC. The only player that appeared to attempt playback was MPC as the timeline was moving. Neither of the others appeared to...

Re: Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
When I get home to re-rip the problematic DVD's I will provide info from mkvinfo. But I get no error when the files are played. They just won't play. But my memory could be faulty. Will try again with multiple players and see if any produce errors. If I do my manual process on the same DVD's and use...

Some Ripped Movies Not Playable
I have some movies which are not playable after they've been ripped. Mallrats and Dogma are two of those. They both rip without error but the resulting files are unplayable.

Fading Subtitles
I'm not sure if it's the same with other editions of the movie. But I have Star Wars I The Phantom Menace Collector's Edition which has fading subtitles. VobSub ripped them correctly. MakeMKV only seems to capture the first frame of the fade so when played back in VLC you get a faint translucent sub...

Re: Issues but no errors.
I've had a similar problem with a few DVD's. It goes through like it's processing. The resulting file is the correct size but the file will not play in VLC or in Windows Media Player with Haali. It is somehow corrupted. The movies I've had this problem with so far are: Mallrats Dogma Harry Potter an...

Forced Subtitles
How about an option to extract only forced subtitles? As sometimes forced subtitles are mixed in with the regular ones.
