Can MKV do this? I see an option to open files but doesn't see the file. Found a converter online for free but quality drops per reviews. Thanks all.

As soon as I get a blueray drive going to upgrade to the full pay version, great program.

An m4v IS an mp4. It's just got a different extension. m4v can be considered a MODE of mp4 but should be fully compatible and all extra m4v headers/metadata should be able to be added to an mp4 without a problem.

MakeMKV deals with Matroska files and optical disc formats only and therefore won't touch an mp4/m4v.

If you want to convert an "m4v" to an "mp4" without loss of quality you can either just change the extension or use mp4box on it to remove all the extra headers/metadata.

These are movies I downloaded from ITunes and would like to place them on my external HD that I have plugged into my TV. All of my ripped DVDs show up but these movies do not show up, TV will not recognize them. I have read that there is some kind of DRM protection on them. I have found programs for $50 that will remove it and make it an MKV or even MP4. Wasn't sure if MakeMKV was able to do the same.

MakeMKV only outputs MKV files, so it won't help you with the format conversion.

Try renaming the files with an M4V extension. Some TVs are particular about the extension, even when they can play a number of different formats. One of my Samsungs refuses to play .MP4, .M4V, or .MKV files... Unless the MP4 files have the extension ".MPG", or the MKV files have the extension ".AVI". Then, they work, without changing the file itself in any other way!

If the files came from iTunes then they're copy protected, you'll need to download a program called Requiem, install an older version of iTunes, then redownload the movies you bought and run requiem to remove the copy protection.

Renaming will not remove the DRM.

Our iHouse is full of Apple TV's, sharing a 8GB iTunes library but for sh*t and giggles I tried the Requiem/Older version of iTunes method with no luck on DRM removal. YMMV. 8)

It works, on windows at least. I think some apple computers have hardware CP as well, which can't be circumvented.

Just make sure you completely remove all components of any previous iTunes installation first and delete all the folders before installing the older version. Even iTunes will use a newer version of a dll if it finds one.

.M4V files are forbidden to .MP4 because it is DRM protected. All you need to have a software to break the DRM here are I recommend TuneFab M4V Converter. Try it!

How to convert an M4V file to MP4:

Rename the file to have the extension MP4 instead of M4V.

Detailed example:

You have file "mymovie.m4v". The following commands will work at various operating system command prompts

REN mymovie.m4v mymovie.mp4
mv mymovie.m4v mymovie.mp4

Apple decided to use the extension m4v for MP4 Video files in part because they wanted to add DRM, but it also signaled QuickTime to enable certain features, like subtitles, in MP4 files. There is also an MP4 Audio file type, m4a, which doesn't have the video track. And many applications that convert video default to using M4V for the MP4 file extension because of limitations on features imposed by QT with the "wrong" extension.

This is a separate discussion from whether or not you can remove the DRM from DRM-infected files that have the M4V extension. DRM-infected files can have any extension at all, including MP4.

If you want to play your files are an ATV and don't want to mess with formats and extensions then use plex or infuse. Problem solved.

Maybe it is hard to use MKV to convert M4V to MP4 if it is from iTunes. However, if it is non-protected M4V, maybe you can have a try to use MKV to have your M4V converted. However, if protected M4V, you can try TuneFab M4V Converter to convert M4V to MP4.

I use the noteburner stuff for stripping the drm off Apple Music files and rented movies. The apps don't work on High Sierra yet, at least the M4V Converter Plus and are buggy as shit on Windows. Honestly, I hate them, but I did pay for them and have stripped probably 30K songs grabbed from Apple Music and dozens of rentals. I'm having a bitch of a time downrevving this MacBook Pro 13' to Sierra from High Sierra though. I've done this in the past with the same hardware, not sure what is different this time. Perhaps it has something to do with creating the USB boot installer on a file system that's about to be blown away and replaced with an older one?
