Yes sir, that was it. I copied the one from the Dolby install folder and it did the trick. Many thanks!

Dolby Vision raised black level in Movies & TV app.

Post by sw5163 »

I've been recently testing DV on the Win11 Movies & TV app. I got both "Dolby Vision" and "Dolby Vision Extensions" plugins installed since I don't know what's the difference between them.

I connected it to S95Z(S95C) and tried the CMv4.0 test pattern from quietvoid, most trims worked so I'm guessing it's LLDV (Samsung doesn't support DV). However, I noticed black level is raised and I got a dark grey when it should be completely black. Windows HDR Calibration app couldn't fix this. Any thoughts would be much appreciated thanks!

HDR10 content also has a very slight raised black in Movies & TV app but it's barely noticeable by naked eye, I have to take a 30 second exposure photo to really make sure and it can be fixed by the Windows HDR Calibration app. DV content black level is unacceptable compared to HDR10. Screenshot and SDR content look right, completely black.

Win11 is on 23H2, AMD driver 23.11.1, all softwares invovled are up to date.
GPU output is set to 10bit Full Range RGB HDR, TV input set to Full Range.

new test file like the eagle beak sample but this time, the L2 trims are a positive lift. I haven't checked on my TV yet but it should show how trim offset not working in TV-LED is a problem

Sorry what's supposed to happen (I forget a lot :-D). Tried it on Oppo (TV-Led)/E7 & maybe noticed a change in brightness in the first transition.

The L2 offset metadata with positive lift (over 2048) has no effect on TV-LED HDMI devices which makes the image darker than the TV's internal player. I just checked on my C2 and its quite noticeable.
I made another test file with even lower nits and you still can see the effect is missing on HDMI devices. It's not as obvious as the true detective sample but look closely in the background, the vegetation..

PS The files are not generated metadata, they are real scenes, original L2 trims and L1.

I dont know, click on the links you quoted maybe? :) I did 3 new samples in total now.

One more test file, The L2 trim offset bug is a lot more obvious in this one because I took the latest Mission Impossible which has a huge positive lift well over 0.025 so it should be also a good test for raised black bars on device that ignores L5.

Weird, I did click on the new links & it downloaded yesterday the ‘true detective’ samples, Maybe some weird browser caching issue. Now I see it’s ’role play’.

I am having trouble in general focusing on subtle differences when switching from Oppo to E7, as choosing media on E7 & all the clicking & DV negotiating/switching takes around 10s. What’s your methodology or do you take photos/videos to compare after ? Some differences are very evident and easy to spot/recall (eagle beak, multi pattern, …) but some others aren’t.

it's not complicated to see. positive Trim offset just doesnt work on HDMI device TV-LED.
Also switching from plex/kodi to bluray input takes less than 2 sec on my setup.

Yeah sorry, my TV is old & it's super clunky to switch. Even w auto-play/resume disabled, when I switch back to it it start playing the video,...
Anyways, I can't see any changes (darker) or I don't know what to see or my TV internal player doesn't show those differences (focusing on "true detective"). I'd say both Oppo & TV internal player look very close. If I ever figure out how to take perfect photos, I can share.

no photo is needed, you should see a visible change for L1 + L2 (no offset) on your TV internal player but not on your Oppo or ATV in tv-led. Same story if you take any of the patterns quietvoid and I did but these new test files are with real content.

True Detective sample: Offset response is quite obvious on the internal TV player
Role Play: almost unnoticeable, the vegetation in the background is brighter with L2 offset on the internal TV player
Mi death reckoning: you cannot miss this one, there is a huge positive lift.
Batman (just added in my GD): very slight change with trims offset on TV internal player only
