For the information of future purchasers, is there a way to tell the old version from the new before buying it (ie. without removing the shrink wrap)?

I took a look at the packaging for the one that I received from Walmart versus the the packaging shown on Amazon and I don't see any differences. I no longer have the one that I bought from Amazon and received a day or two after the initial release to compare against. On the exterior slip cover near the bottom right, the one that I received from Walmart with the 4k disc not stacked on top of the bonus disc reads the following.

Printed in U.S.A. (243897-1) © 2024 20th Century Studios 8102176

From a quick look at eBay listings, that looks to be the same as all the other US versions that are posted. Sorry, I don't see a way to identify the new packaging from the old from the outside.

I returned my scratched copy to Amazon about a week ago and just received a new copy from Wal-Mart. The internal packaging is different (4K disc isn't stacked on top of the bonus features disc). MakeMKV also reports that the "volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted." It appears as MKB20_v77_THE_ABYSS_1436.tgz. I've submitted the new dump file by email to svq@makemkv.com.
Same for me as far as the 4k disc not being stacked on top of or beneath another. I ordered from Target (received today).

Found a workaround that was successful! Using MakeMKV, do a full disc backup via the Folder icon labeled "Backup" and DO NOT decrypt the video (make sure check box is UNCHECKED) and choose where to rip it to on your hard drive.
After this is complete, again using MakeMKV, go to "File", "Open files" and navigate to the folder you ripped it to (sub-folder will be 'THE_ABYSS"), open the folder "BDMV" and double-click the file "MovieObject.bdmv". For me, it successfully opend the disc showing all streams and I was able to get the theatrical and extended cuts from the 4K disc.
Here's wishing you all good luck! Hope it works as well for you as it did for me!!

That's not a magic "work around". You simply got lucky that the disc was readable in that session. The fact that you didn't decrypt it made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Makemkv simply was able to read the whole disc.

That didn't work for any of my scratched discs. They APPEARED to backup but the file sizes were smaller than they should have been, so chunks of the film were missing.

This page has contact information for Walt Disney, including a link to a form to send them an email:
https://support.disney.com/hc/en-us/art ... ey-Studios
I tried that once within the last year. The website has/had a form where you can fill in various kinds of info including the # off the spine of the case.

They merely reply back with a message stating they no longer do disc replacement, so it's a big waste of time.

Yep, Disney certainly ain't what it used to be.

Marvel Studios has gone down the crapper since Disney took over.

Now they don't even stand behind their own products!

Didn't Disney buy Marvel in 2009? :D

Ah, okay, I thought it was later than that.

Recently, I was notified that Target's web site got some back in stock. I ordered one, and it arrived today. This one has a case with a middle tier inside, with each disc attached individually to its own side - No disc stacking. And I was able to successfully rip both the theatrical and extended versions of the movie from the 4K disc.

My optical drive is an LG WH16NS40.

When I bought this one from Target, it was $24.99, but it looks like they've increased the price to $30.49.. :/

Just received the German 4K Disc of THE ABYSS. This is what MakeMKV (Windows) says:
[...]
Saved AACS dump file as C:\Users\.../.MakeMKV/MKB20_v77_THE_ABYSS_34FA.tgz
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc

What now?

Email the MKB20_v77_THE_ABYSS_34FA.tgz dump file to svq@makemkv.com, and then wait a few days for "magic" to happen.

In the meantime, I notice that the public KEYDB.cfg (downloadable from here) already contains these two entries:

Code: Select all

0x4DBCC54736D7F3FE4A163CB63B24308330238135 = THE_ABYSS (THE ABYSS - Ultra HD™) | D | 2024-01-25
0xF4F1CA045FF572B8D11E44AC49566A76A68F794F = THE_ABYSS (THE ABYSS - Ultra HD™) | D | 2024-01-30
This means there is a chance that MakeMKV will be able to read your disk if you copy this latest KEYDB.cfg file into your .MakeMKV directory (i.e. the directory that contains the dump file).

Actually that did the trick! Thanks a lot!!!
Nonetheless I sent you an email with the dump file.
