It looks like the Vantec NST-510S3-BK 9.5mm slim sata case has been discontinued. Is there another good recommended case for the LG BU40N?
Does anyone know if this might work?

According to the Vantec USA site, it has been discontinued.

https://www.vantecusa.com/products_deta ... -+Products

Either way, I am not looking to debate whether or not it is discontinued.

I am trying to understand if this would work with the LG BU40N - https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-Slim-Opti ... r=8-4&th=1

No, as the BU40N is 9.5mm
Cheers :D

We order directly from Taiwan and are the distributor for Europe.

How is the drive connected to your PC?
It is in an external housing connected with a USB 3 cable
Attach it directly to SATA. Not all enclosures support flashing. If you only have a laptop then buy the adapter I recommended further up.
Thanks, that worked! :D
I only needed a SATA to Slim SATA adapter.

Really hoping someone can help me out. I have a WH14NS40, manufactured in 2017, NS50 code and I sued the GUI to flash the WH16NS60 1.02 MK FW (though this particular issue was around on stock firmware). The drive works great for ripping Blu Rays, but CDs will not be read with it.

At first I thought it was a Vantek adapter issue, so I bought another SATA cable and just routed it outside of my PC case(no 5.25 bay), but it was still not working. Trying to update the official firmware, I was getting an "No valid ATAPI device" error. That lead me to the flashing side, which lead to this guide, and I've successfully (and easily, thank you so much for this guide) updated it. But CDs still aren't read. I know this is the MakeMKV forums, but EAC, VLC, nor WMP will see the drive at all. Device Manager in Windows 10 sees it in Device Manager and File Explorer. From what I've seen on reviews, it SHOULD also support CDs.

Any advice or pointers?

How 'bout DVDs? CD/DVD use the red laser. BD/UHD use the blue laser. It's possible you got a defective drive?

Confirming that MakeMKV does in fact read DVDs and I'm making an MKV file right now. VLC and WMP wouldn't read it though.

Defective drives are always a possibility though

Flashing LG WH16NS40 - DE or MK

Post by Tom899 »

Hello, I will be flashing a recent vintage LG WH16NS40, with probably 1.05 (I will be checking in the morning). I'm trying to understand if I should use DE or MK firmware?
This drive is for MakeMKV with UHD discs.
I appreciate your help!

I see this: LG flasher + DE firmware viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18873#p70284
By: Blackened2687 & Billycar11

Or This: MK firmware: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19113
By: Mike Admin

And as a side note, I recently purchased a Pioneer drive from Billy, very nice transaction and the drive works great!

The first post in this thread is maintained and kept up to date. It says in the section titled Recommended Firmware to flash for MakeMKV:
WH16NS40 on any Firmware directly to > WH16NS60 1.02MK

so im pretty green at this .... just flashed my LG WP50NB40 (NB52) with "DE_LG_WP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK" but now on to the cross flash as per instructions --- however id like my drive to be compatible with most ripping SW as per below - however seeing this is almost a year old is there any new .bin files for cross flashing that would make this little drive even better ? If not should i be flashing DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin or DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin ?

would be cool to rip (backup) games with this, but if not possible ill stick with ripping (backing up) my BR movies... please advise

Which instructions are you following(link?)? The only instructions for Windows I see are these from page 1 of this thread.

How To Flash Videos and commands:

New Updated guide for all Drives and firmware including encrypted firmware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyQV1aPlbow
1. Open cmd as admin

2. Navigate to makemkvs install directory by default on 64 bit systems it is here: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV"

3. If you have a listed encrypted firmware you must use this command: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d “ your drive letter here Example: D”: rawflash enc -i “path to your firmware Example: C:\Users\Billy\Downloads\Downgrade-Enabled-Firmware\Auto-Flash\LG-Desktop-NS60-sleep-fix\WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin”

4. If you have unencrypted firmware use this command: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d “ your drive letter here Example: D”: rawflash -i “path to your firmware Example: C:\Users\Billy\Downloads\Downgrade-Enabled-Firmware\Auto-Flash\LG-Desktop-NS60-sleep-fix\WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin”

5. Remove my examples and quotes ”” when you run the commands
The closest firmware match I see in the "The all you firmware..." download is "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BP50NB40-NB50-1.03-NM00800-212005070917.bin" , which is different than the "DE_LG_WP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK" you mentioned. I don't see that one in the pack.
For the most software compatibility use the BU40N 1.00 firmware.
Cool. I found instruction on reddit that worked. here is my drive and libredrive info after flashing the firmware. It's working good , so far!

Is mine good? I think we have the same model drive. For some reason when I try to rip my Tron BlueRay it fails. I should try another disc.
