No Subtitle streams from ripped DVD - is there an option?

Post by basementjack »

Hi,

I'm not getting captions.
I used MakeMKV 1.12.0 on Windows to convert an original Physical DVD to MKV files.
Checking the MKV files in VLC 3, using "Window"->"Media Information..." I only see 2 streams (0 - Video, and 1-Audio)

Image

I tried another tool I own to rip from Physical to MKV and those MKV files have a total of 6 streams, there are 4 closed caption streams, these are missing from the MKV generated by makeMKV from the same source DVD.

Is there a setting in MakeMKV to enable ripping caption streams from a DVD?

Closed caption streams aren't subtitle streams. They're part of the video stream, from what I understand, and the MKV file format doesn't really define a stream type for them.

This has come up before: http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9109

Your options depend a lot on why you're looking for the CC streams. If you are really seeking translated text, there are a number of sites on internet that can supply you with "SRT" subtitles, which tend to look better than the way CC text is rendered in any case.

But if you're looking for them for the purpose of CC, MakeMKV isn't the tool that is going to give them to you right now.

I'm having the same issue. I'm RE-RIPPING Discs that I have done before. The subtitles worked then but with 1.12.2 it is not finding any of them. Since I KNOW 100% for fact that they are there by viewing the disc via VLC as well as I have ripped the discs before there IS something wrong here. All of Hogan's Heroes seasons are coming up without any subtitles.

addendum: I've downloaded version 1.9.4 and no subtitles there either. Strange. I haven't ripped these in years so I have no idea why when this could have occurred.

This is extremely disappointing. I wanted to re-rip these discs with a higher quality but without the text it isn't worth doing. As this is the only tool that I've used since I can remember I know that it did work properly in a prior version. :(

Well, it appears that I can rip the DVD with Handbrake, so there is no need to use MakeMKV for these discs. While I've not used anything but MAKEMKV for many years perhaps I'll use it again at some point. Yes, I bought it. It was worth it. :) I don't mean to insinuate that I'm giving up on it, just for these discs.

Yea, there is something broken here. Just ripped 12 Monkeys. Viewing the disk through handbrake I see that there are 2 subtitles for each video yet Makemkv finds only 1 on MOST but at least on one track for each dvd it finds all of the subtitles. I can't believe that they would create the DVDs with one track different than the others.

From my prior post, I have ONLY used Makemkv to rip DVDs for the past 5+ years. I had ripped the Hogan's Heroes in 2014 and at the time Makemkv found the subtitles but the new versions don't. So it was working and is only partially working now a days.

What tracks are you selecting prior to ripping the disc? Is it possible that you are NOT selecting any subtitle tracks?

My default selection rule selects all Eng sub/audio tracks, although it can be done manually.

Are these the subtitles that come on all films? I dont get the ones that show what the apes say when "signing" in Planet of the ape films, or when they speak Wakandan or Korean in Black Panther.

I'm not looking to translate into another language or have the whole film subtiled for hearing impaired. I just want the ones that are standard on all versions.

Am I missing something absurdly simple?

Thanks

Subtitles vary, depending on how a disc is authored. Sometimes the foreign/forced track is part of the main track.
