Um.... well.... how about you give us something to go on, other than the name of a move and, "It's Broke"?

See the FAQ link in my signature, enable debug logging, and show us the log...

Hi

I had the same problem this morning when I tried to rip The Martian with V1.9.8_osx.
When I upgraded to V1.9.9_osx it ripped perfectly.

This is my first post - I would like to take this opportunity to thank the developers for this brilliant software.

Regards, Ian

I'm having this issue with MakeMKV 1.9.9 on Windows.

I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with a scratched disc as AnyDVD HD rips it to ISO just fine. Using MakeMKV to rip from the ISO also fails.

I got an error trying to attach the log files: "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."

Was a solution to this problem ever found? I can't seem to rip The Martian either. I am running version 1.10.6 on Windows. The error says it's a ready problem (either with the disc or my burner). I can rip other blu-ray movies fine, but not this one. I have even returned this copy and tried a second to no avail.

First of all, this topic is well over a year old, and applies to the Bluray version of The Martian, not the 4K UHD version. Are we discussing the correct disk?

1.10.6 is rather old; 1.10.9 has been out for a week or so now. I ripped The Martian BD with no issues using 1.10.8 last month.

If you got the "UHD + BD + Ultra" edition, make sure you inserted the correct disk.

I realize the topic is old, but a solution was never posted and I'm having the same issue. I am hoping to garner one now. I am trying to rip the standard BD copy of The Martian, not something else.

I just started using MakeMKV back in January; I didn't realize my version was so out of date already. I'll update it and try again this evening.

I upgraded to the newest version of MakeMKV and I'm still having problems ripping the BD. I double-checked to make sure it's not an ultra version, and it's not. I did notice a "copy protected" symbol on it. Is it possible that the encryption is too high for MakeMKV? I did read elsewhere of others having problems ripping The Martian (along with some other titles, with no solution there either).

I am able to rip other BD just fine (before and since this one). Does anyone have any ideas on what might be going on?

Every commercial disk out there is SUPPOSED to have the "copy protected" notification on its packaging somewhere.

But no, the CP on The Martian is not unknown; I ripped it just a month or so ago (BD and UHD versions).

You're probably getting read errors, but we can't tell from your "it doesn't work". What does your log say? (see the FAQ in my signature for how to turn on debug logging)

Yes, I am getting a read error, which is supposed to indicate a problem with the burner or the disc. But my burner has ripped other BDs after this one successfully and this is the second The Martian BD I've tried to rip, both with the same result. Below is the log.

The errors you are getting are concentrated in one section of '/BDMV/STREAM/02175.m2ts', and start around offset '650311680'. The sector at that area does not pass the consistency check, so the system retries the read... issuing a NOT READY status after it times out.

Unfortunately, that segment map is the main feature:

Code:
Title information
Name: The Martian (English)
Source file name: 00800.mpls
Duration: 2:21:37
Chapters count: 32
Size: 35.4 GB
Segment count: 1
Segment map: 2175
File name: The_Martian_t00.mkv

All I can say is that, in general, MakeMKV has no issue with The Martian, so long as your drive can read it.

Just because you've already replaced a disk is no guarantee you did not get another defective one. I went through 4 copies of one disk on Hercules to get one that was readable. When dealing with manufacturing defects, entire lots can have the same defect.

So what you're saying is that, according to the logs, there's a section of the disc that can't be read due, probably, to a manufacturing defect?

I've tried trial copies of a few other ripping programs, just to see if it was MakeMKV having the problem, but they couldn't rip it either. I suppose this would explain that.

All we really know is that the spot is consistently unreadable. If it varied even a little, the more likely explanation would be dirt or a scratch, but it isn't varying, and that section on other disks (at least the one I own) does not have anything special about it in terms of being readable.

I'd still try cleaning it with a damp soft cotton cloth before getting it replaced...

I just recently ordered this movie from Amazon and it burned perfectly. I have since watched the movie with no problems what ever. I have had a few issues with other movies and they were always problems with older or dirty discs. I now make it a policy to burn the disks when I first receive them and only watch them from my server with Plex. I have also recently obtained a laser cleaner from my drive along with compressed air to make sure there are no other problems. Good luck.

I tried cleaning the disk with a damp cloth last night. I still couldn't get it to burn. It looks like burning this disc is a lost cause for me. I think I'll see if I can't find it at Redbox, or borrow it from someone, and burn it then. That should take me out of the defective batch pile -
that or return the disc in a few months, when a new batch should be available. Thanks for all of the help. Now I know what to look for if I have this problem in the future.
