Does ripping blurays ruin/destroy the disk?

Post by P13r_ »

Maybe it's a dumb question, idk, but let me explain.
I have a couple of disks that whenever they were new, i ripped them just fine, but now i cannot rip them anymore, i throws errors, but only when i go rip it, if i watch them, on a bluray player or on my computer, they work just fine for the entire movie. This happens on normal blurays and on 4k blurays, i don't know why, i don't know how, it just happens.
I have ripped multiple disks, multiple times and they are still working just fine, even ripping them, i feel like it's a gamble for every disk that you get honestly.
So, now i have this question, does the rip affect the life of the disk?

No it does not damage them
I have ripped some of my test discs near 1000 times.
Putting them in and out of the tray does more damage than ripping

It's not really a dumb question at all, I've sometimes wondered the same thing myself.

I figure that if a PC's optical drive has a powerful-enough laser to burn information into a blank disc, is it possible for that same laser to corrupt information on a pressed disc?

Given that there would have to be some kind of major malfunction for that to happen, of course.
