Re: MakeMKV files vs original VIDEO_TS/.IFO for archival/future proofing purposes?

the main advantage of mkv over ifo/iso structure is that ifo/iso structure hides multiple things inside of it, this doesn't play nice with "media centers" like kodi / plex, which only provide one entry per media the main advantage(s) of keeping it in info structure is if you like menus and if you wa...

Re: Why no full backup for DVDs?

the reason makemkv does full bluray backups and not DVD, is because there is value in makemkv doing a "protected" backup for blurays (i.e. doesn't have the keys to decrypt it yet) and doing an unprotected backup is just easy. While for DVDs, there's little need for it as can basically be always be b...

Re: Why no full backup for DVDs?

In linux its very very easy to make an encrypted backup of a DVD 1) install libdvdcss 2) run lsdvd <dvd device> # uses libdvdcss to authenticate the disc ot the drive, without doing this, will get many read failures 3) ddrescue <dev device> test.iso test.log this will write out the image to test.iso...

Re: ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.02 and problem reading DVDs

I've ripped 10s to hundreds of DVDs with this drive. Now, its not a particularly fast DVD ripper, but it rips them without any issues/

make a decrypted backup from encrypted backup?

It seems impossible to take an encrypted backup and turn it into a decrypted backup. (i.e. makemkv goes directly to the title selection and makemkvcon backup requires a disc input). Any chance support for taking an encrypted backup and turning it into a decrypted backup can be added? edit: take the ...

document discatt.dat format?

Is it possible to document the discatt format? The reason I ask is that while I like makemkv if I'm making mkv's, if my goal is to make a full disc backup that is playable, I need to use a tool like anydvd (while makemkv works for non java discs, it mostly doesnt for discs with java based protection...

usb to sata adapters?

Anyone know of any usb to sata adapters (externally provided power most likely) that work with desktop optical drives? I got a cheap one from ebay that has a 12v input and it works with my desktop sata hard disks (so its not a loss, and for under $1 after ebay coupon was willing to risk it), but doe...

Better way to use ddrescue? (or how do BluRays do error correction?)

I'm wondering if I'm using ddrescue in a manner that is optimal in regards to the error correcting codes on a bluray. namely: do blurays error detect/correct codes on a 2048 byte block boundary or is it larger. i.e. I use ddrescue -b 2048 -d to read the discs in a direct io manner, and even with dif...

Re: Keep Orginal MKVs or Recompressed?

In the US, you can get an 8TB external drive regularly for $130-$140ish (not every day, but regularly). Lets say its 50GB (this is very conservative, probably on average in the 30-40GB range) for a movie, that's about 160 movies you can fit on a single drive. so each movies basically costs less than...

Hardwre difference between BDXL and UHD Drives?

So obviously there's a difference, as not all BDXL drives can read UHD discs, I've just done a lot of googling and see people asking this Q but never getting a technical answer as to what is the difference. i.e. a regular 1080p bluray video disc is just a regular Bluray in terms of bits on disc with...

Re: HD-DVD - 1080p false advertising?

depends on how static the image is. There's reason ABC/ESPN decided to go with 720p for sports insted of 1080i. For constantly changing scenes, 720p is a constant 720 lines of vertical resolution, while for fast moving things 1080i will devolve to 540 of vertical resolution https://www.reddit.com/r/...
