Re: Flashing the ASUS BW-16D1HT and or LG-BH16NS40

NS40 drives with a manufacturing date in 2015 and prior are the ‘old’ type, which you want to avoid. The NS40 ‘new’ type will say on the label “Service Code: NS50” and will have a manufacture date in 2016 or later. The new NS40 drives are actually just NS50 drives rebadged as NS40. No, I’ve no idea ...

Re: Flashing the ASUS BW-16D1HT and or LG-BH16NS40

As far as desktop drives are concerned, Asus BW-16D1HT, LG NS40 with service code NS50 , LG NS50, and LG NS55 are all the same drive. LG NS60 is the same again, with the addition of the chipset for official UHD playback. Regardless, all of these drives will rip UHD BluRay discs when flashed with the...

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Guide Updated 2020

As far as I know, the only changes made in the last few firmware updates put out by LG are to do the following: Prevent downgrades Attempt to kill off LibreDrive Implement the ‘requirement’ of ‘encrypted’ firmware updates Mike has removed those restrictions in the MK firmware. You could, I suppose, ...

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Guide Updated 2020

If you’re referring to the MK firmware, none of them are encrypted, and any checks to require encrypted future updates have been removed.

Re: HL-DT-ST (LG) Safe cross-flash matrix

Nice discovery, Mike! I’ve no idea why half of those second tier drives exist though. BH14NS50 versus BH16NS50? 14 / 16 represents the max BD-R write speed, correct? So why purposely limit drives to 14x? What’s the difference between a BH16NS40-NS50 and a BH16NS50? Did they just have a load of print...

Re: Number of licenses

I think the MakeMKV licensing model works on an honesty principle. Of course I must stress that I don’t speak for Mike, but this is the impression I am given. If you have it installed with the same key on two or three machines; say your ‘main’ PC, an HTPC, and a laptop, and you alone do the ripping,...

Re: My poor ancient HD-DVD/BD Combo!

So how hard will it be to turn these into a libredrive? I'm sure Mike will take a look, when he has the time. Now if I can only find that Xbox 360 external HD-DVD drive laying around here somewhere... I've got a box full of those somewhere, all still sealed, never seen the light of day. Not sure th...

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Guide Updated 2020

Fortunately there are people around who see the fixing of the mistakes of others as a challenge, right? :) Whether it’s people erroneously updating the firmware, or buying a drive that’s already been updated. Or if it’s the drive manufacturers themselves, putting out badly broken firmware updates......

Re: Query Regarding "DVD all region: Yes"

Right, kind of as I expected. Just learning a bit about how things work here. :)

So, when processing a disc, if I check the drive region in the Windows drive properties, or indeed in AnyDVD, at the ‘right time’, then I should expect to see what I saw.

That’s pretty cool. Thanks for the details. 8)

Query Regarding "DVD all region: Yes"

I’ve been wondering about the exact functionality behind MakeMKV’s “DVD all region” assertion. Is this just for within MakeMKV? Or is it patched in MK firmware? I have a BH16NS55 drive for which the Windows drive properties show as being set to Region 2 (4 changes remaining). I’ve been testing capab...
