Re: default Settings for DVD
Which usually can be changed by turning off subtitles in the player's setup. I have yet to see one not providing this option. Then take a look at the Uebo M400 and the old Seagate FreeAgent Theater. I've checked every menu option on both, and neither will default to subtitles OFF. And the way Handb...

Re: Hardcoded subs missing
The default is to rip the file with ALL audio and subtitle languages into the MKV file. When I rip some disks, I have to manually disable as many as 6 languages I'm not interested in.

Re: default Settings for DVD
A lot depends upon your player. I have two players that, no matter what the settings are in the FILE for subtitles, they always display the first subtitle track, and play the first audio track. If the audio happens to be English and the first subtitle track the "forced" subtitles, life is ...

Re: Newbie, question about first BR rip
Well, a lot depends upon what you ASKED it to do....
When the BD is inserted, did you select "backup disk", or "open disk"?
To create the MKV files, you first Open the disk, which will give you the the list of tracks on the disk to chose from. Backup doesn't do that.

Re: 1.7.3, Application failed to initialize
This error has popped up in the past... because, SOMETIMES , MakeMKV won't properly exit. The command line portion will continue to "run" after the GUI is closed. If it is still loaded in memory, the install of the new version will be unable to copy the newer version to disk, and you have ...

Re: Rip as an m4v/mp4 file as well as mkv
Not to mention that it would slow the process of ripping disks a LOT. On the Mac, you can use Handbrake to go directly from a DVD to MP4 (Handbrake can handle encrypted DVDs on the mac). Friend of mine does it. Takes forever to process a single disk, where I can rip a whole TV season in the same tim...

Re: Star Wars Playback Issue
A lot depends upon what you're playing them on. I've seen this with playing either MKV or MP4 1080p video across the network using several players (Asus, Seagate, Uebo), and even from the local hard drive in VLC, if the system load gets too high (Handbrake doing encodes, for example).

Re: Multiple Audio Streams
Generally speaking, if a player will handle MKV, it will also read any of the audio tracks in it that it has a CODEC for. So it is faster to let MakeMKV select all the audio tracks and put them into the MKV, although you can toss out any foreign languages you're not interested in. When you're recodi...

VLC 2.0 has some interesting anomalies... Try using the Playback/Chapters menu a few times, and watch what happens with the menu itself.
I'm getting ready to go back to the 1.1.11 version, which was at least stable.

Re: Bluray ripping - dialog vs music loudness
Have you used the same play software to play the BD itself, or is it something that can't play BD disks directly? As mentioned in another topic, you will probably find that the characteristics of an MKV playing in, say, VLC, match exactly the characteristics of the original disk. That is, if the mus...

I have been using MakeMKV since v1.5.4, and there has not been a "backup DVD" option in any version I've used.

Re: Sentai Filmworks Discs No longer Opening
Would you happen to have the older Sentai BD title "Samurai Girls" from August 2011 to test? It works fine on MakeMKV 1.70 and later (just tested it on 1.72) for Windows. It would be interesting to see if this is a difference between Windows and Mac, or if it is something new Sentai is doi...

How does the DVD look when you play it with VLC on the Mac? Are you playing it at "native resolution", or "full screen"? I've noticed different artifacts when playing both DVDs and MKVs at something other than the actual resolution (or integral multiple), but they're consistent -...

Re: slow makeMKV to Handbrake from Blu Ray
Are you running the release version of Handbrake (0.9.5) or one of the nightly builds? There are significant speed improvements in the nightlies! But compressing a BD at high definition does take a while, and a lot of memory. 8gb is about right for Star Trek at 1920x1080 resolution, compressed with ...

Re: Question concerning subtitles in English Language films
Before you look at how to set up MakeMKV, check your player, first - the software used by Uebo and Seagate (amongst others) defaults to ALWAYS showing you the first subtitle stream, and you have to turn it off for each file played. I haven't found an menu setting to change this behavior on either un...
