I haven't ripped any HD-DVDs in some time, but I never had that problem with DD+, DTS, or TrueHD audio based disc.

Some people have had tremendous problems with Avangate, and resulted in insulting the people trying to help them, so I can appreciate the issue here.
Personally, I had no problem with the purchase.

I've used Asus drives, but I'm sure LG would be good to use. Incase you end up trying an external drive, make sure it's powered by a power connection and not the USB bus.
I'm not aware of a simple process to go from MakeMKV to Plex, but there might be.

Also, note that some of the streams that are on the disc, and can be held in the MKV container, can not be used in the MP4 container.

Disk mastering is one of the biggest irritations you can have in ripping discs.

AnyDVD is not available for OS X, so I doubt that is the problem.

You can split the various episodes out of a big title by using mkvtoolnix, and the splitting function.

You can use an existing version as long as you want.
You can use it without having to deal with out having to enter the free key if the new version doesn't come out.
You can use it for more than 30 days after your first HD rip.
Functionally, they are of course the same.
