Re: What Backend/Frontend Encoder Do You Use?

i mostly use plex for that. Yes, that requires being online, but that's generally not been a problem, and if I'm going offline for an extended period of time, I just load up a HD. Also, not all storage has to be kept online at all times. At the end of the day, the time it sets to set up an encode /...

Installing new versions wipes away my custom profiles

I seem to wipe away my custom (audio) profiles every time I install a new linux version from source as (I'm guessig) it deleted the directory on installation.

any chance it can be less blunt in doing that?

Re: What Backend/Frontend Encoder Do You Use?

I don't transcode. storage space is "cheap", my time is not (i.e. say an 8TB Drive is $120, if a movie is 75cents or less to store. There are other reasons to transcode. If you want to take some of your collection with you on a phone or tablet or stream it outside your home, doing that wi...

Re: Rip from ISO of a damaged disc?

If you've been able to make a full 100% copy with ddrescue, use anydvd to decrypt. If anydvd users have decrypted the disk before, all you have to do is use an iso mounter and anydvd will be able to decrypt the iso (as already knows the key). if anydvd users have not decrypted the disk before, all y...

it costs them money to use. If they decide its not worth it (i.e. doesn't cause added sales), they won't use it.

Re: Issue Ripping Babylon 4 S1 Disc 4

Honestly, its a waste and a terrible experience to try and rip Babylon 5 off of DVD. It's not a good watching experience. The best experience these days is to use the HBO Max / Amazon streaming versions.

Re: Do I need both 5.1 Surround and Stereo?

the stereo mix isn't always a subset of the 5.1 mix. the 5.1 mix can be independent. For older movies they may have been originally mixed at 2.0 and sometime later (recently) for the DVD or bluray release wuld have been upmixed to 5.1. Sometime the 2.0 mix included wont be the original 2.0 mix, but ...

Re: Star Trek Discovery All Seasons

IIRC, I believe I had problems playing it in VLC, therefore, it could be a problem with the reverse engineered bluray libs. I believe I got it to play fine on my oppo. Basically, if a disc doesn't play on a non licensed platform, its hightly probable that its a bug in the platform, as otherwise you'...

Re: Chuck complete series

I believe Chuck has individual playlists for each each episode, so you would rip each episode individually (in general, the only releases I've ever seen consistently not behave this way are some Anime releases where there isn't a per episode playlist, just a single one and the menus jump you via cha...

Re: Overriding the skipping of duplicate files / aspect ratio changes

I believe this is the answer: DVD files have aspect ratio listed in 2 places. in the VOB and in the IFO. In practice, the IFO is the one that the DVD standard says players should use. MakeMKV uses the VOB, not the IFO. Therefore, for badly authored discs (where the VOB has the wrong aspect ratio), M...

Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.

Has the firetv cube gen 3 now surpassed the Shield as the best player for DV MKVs as it now supports bitstreaming? It has better DV support, right? (does it use the EL? or also just the RPUs, but better color accuracy?) It doesn't have gigabit ethernet, but the wifi 6E could conceptually compensate ...

Re: How do you handle multiple Chinese subtitles?

Hello folks, Is there any trick to telling one Chinese subtitle from another when ripping a disc? It's not uncommon for discs to have 2-3 Chinese subtitle tracks and I'd prefer to only include the "simplified" version, if possible. Unfortunately, MakeMKV lists them all as "PGS Chines...
