Re: Need some help with +sel:(forced&(eng))
That actually seems to be the case: when you open the GoT DVD in MakeMKV, you don't get the forced subtitle track you can select with BDs. The only thing you can do is extract the sub and use BDSUP2SUB to create a new track with only the forced items to be muxed into your MKV with MKVToolnix. Or be ...

Re: tsmuxer + makemkv (subtitle)
I'd agree srt often will suffice. By function at least. But "more than fine" may be overgraded. How srt will look on-screen, depends on the player's onboard bells and whistles to handling text-based subs. The format was basically developed as simple text only, without thought of any furth...

Re: tsmuxer + makemkv (subtitle)
I can't think of any reason why SRTs shouldn't be more than fine on playback.

Re: Need some help with +sel:(forced&(eng))
Using -sel:all,+sel:(deu|eng|nolang),-sel:(core),-10:(forced*(eng)),-15:(deu),-20:(forced*(deu)) MakeMKV will open the disc and pre-select all English and German subs including (forced only). And yes, this means that if there are forced items inside a subtitle track, MakeMKV will create one separate...

Re: Subtitles. Subtitles everywhere. How do you select?
It is also possible to name tracks after the fact with mkvpropedit which is part of the MKVToolNix tools. There are GUIs available for the MKVToolNix tools, but I prefer the command line. From the rip above, the command line for changing that track's title would be: No need for command-lines when y...

Re: True hardcoded for foreign subs without selecting pgs
"True" hardcoded subs are encoded into the video stream and since MakeMKV does not touch the video, it is not possible. I don't own the Fury Bluray but if the subs are flagged as forced on the disc, MakeMKV will create an extra track with only these items which can be set to forced in the ...

If it's actually burnt in then you can't turn it off. Also, MakeMKV does not touch the video.

Re: Text based subtitles
Subtitle Edit can open the sub from inside the mkv but it takes a while so you might as well extract it with MKV Cleaver or something. Its OCR uses Tesseract and works pretty well but you'll be asked about a lot of words not yet in the dictionary. I often use Subextractor instead when ripping tv sh...

Re: Forced subtitles in DVDs
Aside from running on a PC (I'm a Mac guy), I see that MKVcleaver is a GUI for MKVToolNix and I've previously mentioned that MKVToolNix has just horrendous issues with audio/video sync when converting DVDs to MKV. You could run Windows in a virtual machine if necessary. The few DVDs I've muxed to M...

Re: Forced subtitles in DVDs
For DVDs the issue is messier than BDs in that DVDs utilize two different ways to deal with forced subtitles - they can either be in their own track, or suitably tagged and embedded in a fixed language subtitle track. Actually, there's more options for subs on BDs - and this being 2022, as you ment...

Re: Forced subtitles in DVDs
There are definitely players out there that, with No Subtitles selected during playback, will show only the forced subtitles in a VIDEO_TS structure. Exactly, in a VIDEO_TS structure but not from an MKV. VLC on Windows certainly will not. I agree however, that MakeMKV should offer to extract only f...
