makemkv choice between mpls and m2ts

Hi,

Was wondering if someone here can please help me out with makemkv.

I still have a few iso's from loaners BR from years ago in my to-rip folder but I don't know how to approach these.

1 iso is from the movie Casino, makemkv gives me the choice between a mpls and a m2ts:

The 2nd one is from Braveheart, where I have to choose between 2 mpls files or a ms2ts file:

Someone here who can shed some light on this. Should I "just" chose the m2ts and be done with it or will that have consequences ending up with a bad rip?

You will notice that the play lists have chapters, where the transport streams usually do not.

The play list is preferred because it "ties together" all the parts. Not all movies are contained within a single transport stream (it's called "seamless branching").

When there are multiple play lists, other factors can come into play - Disney, for example, will change the title and credit screens to different languages, depending on which PL is selected. Lionsgate, on the other hand, just likes to mess with your mind by putting hundreds of fake PLs on the disk.

Some additional info...

Think of the M2TS files like the chapters in a book and the MPLS files like a Table of Contents. Many BluRay discs have multiple MPLS files that "might" be the movie but actually aren't because they list the chapters in the wrong order, don't have all of the chapters, or list extra chapters.

When you look at any of the identified items after opening a disc, click on the line and look in the pane on the right side. If it is referencing an MPLS file, it will show which segments that MPLS file say are the ones to use and in what order.

As mentioned, Disney will commonly use 00800.MPLS for the English version of the movie and 00801.MPLS and 00802.MPLS as the French and Spanish versions. If you look at the segment maps for each of these, you will typically see a common starting segment and most segments through the movie the same. There will be a different segment for each somewhere near the beginning (opening credits written in different languages) and near the end (same for closing credits). The rest of the movie is exactly the same so there's no need to duplicate them.

You can use BDInfo to open mpls and see what m2ts are used and how many minutes they run.

An alternative is to use DVDFab to help select the correct MPLS (by selecting only the main movie, DVDFab will select the correct MPLS) After you've figured that out, you can use Makemkv to do the actual ripping (I like makemkv better than DVDFab)
