same drive, different OS, different AACS support levels?

Post by brakeb »

1st machine: Lenovo yoga X1 with windows 10
Paid MakeMKV installed version: 1.15.3

2nd machine: Macmini 2014 with 10.15.7 installed
Paid MakeMKV installed version: 1.15.3

blu-ray drive: (Samsung) BD-RE TSSTCorp BDDVDW SE-506CB TS01

On the MacMini: highest AACS version: 31

On the Lenovo: Highest AACS version: 62(!)

This means that discs I'm trying to make backups of on one machine will not work on another... what's the issue here?

I believe "highest AACS version" is the highest version the drive has seen. It gets updated with new discs.

I believe "highest AACS version" is the highest version a MakeMKV user has seen.

But the drive has 'seen' several discs at AACS 62 on the windows host, shouldn't transfer to the OSX also show AACS 62?

Also, that same drive fails to rip discs on the OSX that rip fine on Windows. Just throws up 'fatal error' and dies.

So I guess I'll just use both bluray drives on one machine at the same time. Probably more efficient anyway.

The "highest seen" is stored on the local machine, not on the drive.

What the drive stores is the revocation information from a disk, and that is loaded before MakeMKV can actually see it.

Images above demonstrate that that data is stored at the PC user level, NOT by the drive. Even a different user on the same PC could see a different "highest AACS version" reported.

okay, that makes sense. I'll have to do some additional troubleshooting as to why the same disc that will rip on the windows machine won't rip (and show errors) on the OSX version.

Thanks for the information.

It is hard to tell from the poor images I found on the internet, but it seems like that drive is only USB powered? One of your computers might be feeding it more power over USB than the other. Are you using a USB hub or plugging it directly into the computer?
