Need help with an older LG drive

Post by brucehvn »

I'm trying to identify my drive in more detail. It's an LG WH14NS40 and I've tried flashing it with some newer firmware and now it can't read discs.

I replaced it and moved it to an external enclosure so I can keep working on it. When I pulled it out, I see that it was manufactured in Jul of 2013. Most everything on here talks only about versions after 2015.

I see nothing on the label to indicate NS40 or NS50. There's no SVC code.

Is it possible this was an NS40 drive that I accidentally flashed with NS50 firmware? The first time I flashed it was with the LG flashing tool for Windows that's bundled with the firmware. The flasher showed NS50, so I assumed that meant it had detected it as NS50, but maybe not? Maybe it was just showing what version I was about to flash?

The label says it came with firmware 1.01. I flashed 1.01 NS50 to it, but I still can't read discs.

I seem to have no problem flashing it with makemkvcon, so I could put the NS40 firmware that Billycar11 links to here. But I'd like some kind of confirmation that this drive most likely is an NS40 version. Is there any other way to tell if it doesn't have a SVC code? Maybe that in itself indicates it's NS40?

If it is from 2013, it is one of the older drives.

Ok, thanks. But what does that mean? If it's an older drive, should it be using the NS40 firmware? Were there any NS50 drives in 2013?

All I want to do is flash it back to whatever it came with or something that will get it reading discs again.

BillyCar11 thank you for the reply. I don't know if I'm sounding dense here or what. I don't think my drive is totally bricked. When I run MakeMKV, it shows all the firmware information for what I flashed last.

I don't have any problem flashing to it using makemkvcon. My only question is whether this is an NS40 or NS50 drive.

It was built in 2013 and has no SVC code on the label. If someone just confirms to me that it's an NS40 drive, I'll reflash it with your firmware to fix my flashing it with NS50 firmware.

But if there is a possibility it is a NS50 drive, I need to know how to tell that.

Excellent. Thank you. Now I will proceed to follow the other guides here to see if I can get it reading again.
