I took the same steps on a Netflix Blu-Ray rental that Wondercow shared with us earlier in this thread.

Using AnyDVD I found that playlist 461 was a good playlist on the Netflix Blu-Ray rental. (see output below)
I opened the Netflix Blu-Ray rental with MakeMKV and kept clicking on all of the selections until I found the one with playlist 461.
The MakeMKV copy worked perfectly. All chapters in order.

Here is the output from AnyDVD on the Netflix Blu-Ray rental:

Latest beta of AnyDVD still shows playlist 778 as the right one for my disc (U.S. retail from Amazon).

Confirmed. Playlist 00778.mpls is the correct one for UPC 0-31398-18152-1 (e.g., BD+DVD+Digital HD Combo package purchased from Amazon) and as also recovered using VLC:

That is so weird! My amazon disc was 00795 (as I posted previously, and showed that the segment maps in 00778 were incorrect). I watched the ripped movie and it appears to be correct as well... So Lion's gate is just messing with us? :)

I imagine it would not be very difficult to have several versions of discs (i.e., different playlists that nevertheless play the same movie), even with the same UPC code. Makes it difficult for people to just post the correct number in the forums.

I've dealt with the same multiple title issues with Catching Fire, Enders Game, and Escape Plan. End result is I've picked a title to rip in makemkv based off the majority agreement on these forums. The problem I've had is with the audio track. Any of these bluray discs that present as multiple titles in makemkv only give me Dolby Digital soundtracks to rip (AC3, 640kbps). But when I play the same disc in my bluray player, all the discs play in DTS-MA 5.1 or 7.1.

00778.mpls worked for me.
It was the package that included a Blu ray, DVD and Digital copy. Afterwards my wife and I watched the whole movie from start to finish and didn't notice a problem. (And yes, we own the movie, and have it sitting in a box along with all the other movies we have copied to our computer.)

Would someone be kind enough to explain why the playlist or segment numbers matter?

I've ripped a couple discs that appeared to have duplicates of the movie and just chose one to rip thinking there was no difference in the resulting mkv.

I would really appreciate an explanation because I've been building my move library not caring which of the large gigabyte playlists to rip.

Think of each segment as a single chapter of the film. Now, re-arrange their order so that chapter 3 plays after chapter 7 and chapter 8 plays after chapter 2; instead of a film that plays thus: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 you have one that plays like this: 1, 2, 8, 4, 5, 6, 7, 3, 9, 10.

Just like a music library playlist holds audio track in a certain order, a Blu-ray's playlists hold the segments in a particular order, but only one is the right order.

There are also movies like those those from Disney and Pixar where, in North America, there are three full-movie playlists. In this situation all three are the correct and complete movie, but the first has signs and text in English, the second has signs in Spanish, and the third, French. (By "signs" I mean anything written, like a newspaper, a billboard, a poster, et cetera. These text portions are localized for a given language and play automagically when one selects the language to use for the disc.)

The UK version seems to be different again.

I bought the Blu Ray / DVD / Ultravoilet version of The Hunger Games Catching Fire.

I did a complete backup with MakeMKV and then went through and matched up the segments visually against the retail disc playing.

I gotta say obscuring which title is the movie is a pretty petty form of DRM. I waste a couple of hours figuring it out, so it hardly seems like it's really stopping anyone. Just makes it more unpleasant for genuine customers who want to rip these discs to there own media server.

So, if I can watch the movie in the right sequence, then I chose the right playlist right?

Am I right in assuming that there is no difference in audio or video quality between the playlists?
