Dual video streams 2160/1080

I've noticed that on many recent UHD films that the container includes both a 4k and 1080p stream. When you look at the container in MakeMKV it only seems to show the 4k stream, but if you look at the same file in something like mediainfo it shows both. When you run MakeMKV the exported file only shows the 4K media but the file size is not reduced and its seems like it should be. Is this on the roadmap? I know there are other programs but I like MakeMKV as it doesnt re-encode the stream :)
A recent example of this is the new Back to the Future 4k release.

The 1080P stream is the Dolby Vision enhancement layer.
If you use the latest version of Makemkv to rip, these layers will be interleaved in the Mkv file allowing for future playback in Dolby vision once compatible players are readily available.

That 1080p stream you are seeing is the Dolby Vision.

Thanks for the super fast reply!!!
That seems odd that DV would be a 1080 stream, I thought DV was just meta data? So is it an issue with MediaInfo not displaying the file information correctly? To double check this I actually opened the same file in JRiver and it also acts as if there are two different video streams. Although when I try to switch between the two streams in JRiver the "1080" one is grey.

It's not supposed to be a viewable stream. It's just data that is compressed

It depends what type of Dolby vision the disc is mastered with.
A Full Enhancement Layer FEL 1080p stream supposedly contains the differential video data between the encoded 10 bit stream and the original 12 bit master. If you play it it looks black and white.
The Minimal Enhancement Layer MEL stream contains only metadata.

Ok that must be what this is, thanks for the info!!! So it sounds like mediainfo needs to show that stream differently :)

hmm, that explains why on my Sony Bravia the mkv's played with plex come out black and white with an FEL.
