Hi guys,

I hope this is the right place to post my question.

I am looking to buy this LG BH16NS55, in hope it supports ripping of uhd blu-rays. As I don't have it yet, i can't post any information makemkv would provide. The seller sent me a picture of the drives label, but i find the information found in this thread hard to understand. Can anyone help me make sense of it?

The label states:
MODEL: BH16NS55
[chinese characters] 2016 01 25
ROM VER:1.20
MANUFACTURED: JANUARY 2016 RoHS
SVC CODE:NS55

Does this drive need to be flashed, and if so, which version would be the correct one?

We highly recommend avoiding this product as it may be a counterfeit. If you're considering purchasing from Aliexpress, be cautious. We recently bought two drives from a seller on the platform out of curiosity about their quality, but regretfully, they turned out to be of poor quality with numerous read errors. The sellers assured us that the drives were original but also said he had copies.

See the website. He will openly tell you he can copy any drive. Scary world! We do have brand new Hitachi BH16NS55 and ASUS desktop drives, but to be hones these drives do not read all BD100 3 layer discs.

It's a "Buffalo BRUHD-PU3-BK", bought that (from Japan) because it's listed as a good drive.

MakeMKV says this:


I use it on a Mac, so i'm not sure if it's encrypted or not.

Just bought a BP50NB40 NB52. I bought and ran Marty's flasher which seemed way too easy to use. Find the drive and hit start. I didn't get any errors, but it still shows up as a BP50NB40 in MAKEmkv. It's currently reading Blu-Ray but will not read 4K UHD. So it looks like the cross flash didn't take, what would I be missing?

I've been looking at all this "libredrive" stuff and am thoroughly confused. Can someone create me a step by step for this unit, where the flashing software is, where the new firmware is, and whether or not my drive has encrypted firmware, or whatever that means?

I assume that your drive is actually a WH14NS40?

If so, flash it to WH16NS60 1.02MK.

SDF Tool will auto detect encryption, etc, so just select the above firmware and hit flash.

If you follow through Post #1 of this thread, it's pretty clear.

I'm planning to rip a thousand movie collection. About 15 4K Blu-rays (not a lot but I do not want to wait to rip them), over 500 DVDs and the rest are blu-rays.

Would one drive be better suited for this situation than another?

I'm in Canada btw.

pretty much the only drives you should consider are pioneers with old fw if you not able to get those then a BU40N/W/BP50/60 or just get the cheapest lg/asus they are the same

but yeah pioneers are best very glad not to be dealing with the LG/asus any more replacing drives for everyone constantly

I'd love a pioneer the only thing holding me back is the big price difference ordering from a seller to ship here in canada, and the apparent slow speed of the drives (considering it's a thousand movies to be ripped). If the reliability of the BU40N is close to those that makes me hesitate.

Billy, one thing I don't understand is how come the BDR-213EBK, for example, isn't shown in the list of pioneer drives that work in the guide here, yet asmcom does sell it as a flashed UHD drive. guide is focused on usa drives and the EBK is not an offical UHD drive its crossflashed no one except the flashers can crossflash the pioneers so no point telling the public it works when it wont unless you buy a modified one

I purchased an ASUS BC-12D2HT (Model #: B99V827) as I had been told that it can read 4k blurays however none of the 4k discs that I have seem to work in it and when searching I found this thread. Can someone please confirm if this drive is capable and safe to flash?

Yes it it's mt1959 you can flash it to Asus 3.10 you might need enc depending on fw date 2020+ needs it
