Is this currently the only UHD friendly external drive available? I'm running a laptop with no ability to expand it and buying a desktop is not an option.
I am in the same situation and I ended up going with the Asus BW-16D1HT with a Vantec external enclosure. Works like a champ.

Hi guys,

if I understand you right, my device would not work, because of the wrong service code. Is there any possibility to get this to work?

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: F:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BH16NS40
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: K96F7UF5237
Firmware date: 2115-05-26 17:14:
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 62
If not, I would buy an ASUS BW-16D1HT.

Regards Hoppel

BUFFALO external slim UHD drives

Post by planet1 »

Hello,

after buying a BRXL-PT6U2VB (manufactured November 2017), I was rather disappointed that the original FW BN10 (Date: 2017-05-30) was incapable of reading UHD blu-rays.

Flashing to the latest FW BN11 (Date: 2017-11-20) did not improve a thing.

Since the old FW v1.02 ought to be the same for numerous BUFFALO slim drives:

Code: Select all

BRUHD-PU3
BRXL-PT6U3
BRXL-PT6U2V
DVSM-PTS58U2
DVSM-PT58U2V
is there any way to force flash this FW Version?

Just got a WH14NS40 and I've been able to Rip Deadpool no problem.
However I was not able to rip Oblivion... The disc won't even open.
I tried to load the Asus 3.02 firmware that I got from Asus website called ASUS ODD FW Updater for BW-16D1HT.exe
But each time I press Start I get a popup saying: There is no target drive.

Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance, people :)

Because no Asus drive is detected. You have to use the LG crossflash flasher and load the clean firmware.

I've written a specific guide to do that. https://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopi ... 16&t=17058

Wow, thanks Teddy for the great guide but it's really 'chinese' to me... This looks way too complicated for me.
I was hoping for an .exe and be done with it :(

Try this. Run the exe and select the firmware bin file (ASUS 3.02).

@ArieS

Maybe your Oblivion UHD disc is a faulty one.

I got a LG BH16NS55 manufactured in March 2017, ROM is 1.02 and SVC is NS55

I can't try it right now as I don't have the enclosure yet, but does it read them?

EDIT: Yes it does:
All BH16NS55 are SVC NS55

the WH16NS40 & BH16NS40 must have SVC NS50 to be UHD friendly. The NS40 drives have been around for years and were originally SVC NS40. The later one's from around the end of 2015 or early 2016, I believe are SVC NS50. All BH16NS55 are SVC NS55.

So, whenever someone is talking about having SVC NS50, they are referring to the WH16NS40 & BH16NS40 drives.

Yes if you have a 3.00, 3.01 or 3.02 firmware. Firmware 3.03 fix the loophole, and if you have an old disc with FW 1.xx, it will not work also.

Probably not, because the last FW is very recent, and the whole process of fabrication, storage, sending to receler etc... takes time. So drive manufactured right now with FW 3.03 (and if drive manufactured right now are with FW 3.03) will probably not be in the market before a little while, but, don't take too long.
So right now, probably you'll get a disc manufactured not after half 2017, with a FW 3.01.
Recelers have to sell their stock before re-supply.
I've bought last week this drive in twice, one was manufactured half 2017 with FW 3.01, the other half 2016 with FW 3.00. So, if you buy your drive now, you'll not have a FW 3.03.
