I'm likely to get to it today. Testiles flashed an ns40 firmware on his ns60 and it's able to do everything now. He burned a bdr and it's friendly. I still want to know if flashing the calibration data for the Asus 3.02 firmware will work so I'll try it in a bit.

Alright boys and girls, I have the data we need regarding cross flashing the ASUS 3.02 firmware onto an LG NS60 and being able to write to BD-R/E media. Here's what I did:

Took my firmware bin dump from my ASUS drive that has 3.02 natively (never downgraded or molested in any way LOL) on it and replaced the drive encryption data with the encryption data extracted from my LG drive. I then fired up my WinPE image and dosflashed it onto the LG that has 1.00 on it. So we now have a drive that is flashed with ASUS firmware and calibration data with the LG digital signature. I tested opening a UHD with AnyDVD just to make sure the digital signature of the drive is working. No issue. Then I burned a 25gb BD-R with a UHD ISO I made of a Dolby Vision movie using ImgBurn. I'm now watching said disc on my UB820 (with Dolby Vision and ATMOS...nice). What's left to do is restore the drive back to LG 1.00 (and leave the poor thing alone...it's had a rough couple weeks of life LMAO) and do another test burn to ensure nothing got screwed up.

In any case, if you want to cross flash and keep the ability to write discs, using the calibration data from the firmware you're flashing to will make it work, BUT, that means flashing with dosflash. Choose wisely. LOL

So this is different from what’s been possible all along how?
Does MakeMKV report the drive as an ASUS or an LG?
Thank you.

Um, it's not different from what's been possible. The point of this was to show that if someone cross flashes the NS60 using the patched windows flasher (aka the "safe" flashing method) to the ASUS 3.02 firmware, they will not be able to burn BD media. I wanted to ensure that what we thought we knew about using dosflash was indeed accurate in that if you use the calibration data from an ASUS drive that has the firmware on it that you're cross flashing to, it essentially turns the NS60 into a full on ASUS drive. And yes, it shows up as an ASUS once you do that. But the key here is not using the LG calibration data that was extracted but instead using the calibration data from a drive that you're flashing to. So in that sense, given that the "old method" of using dosflash typically doesn't do that, then I guess it's technically different than what's been done before but was always possible. In any case, cross flashing to another LG drive works fine, as well, even with the patched windows flasher method. It's only when you cross from the LG NS60 to the ASUS 3.0x firmware did I see an issue. And since it wasn't just my drive that had the issue I wanted to report my findings to let people know. I can't imagine too many people are buying NS60's and cross flashing them to ASUS 3.0x firmware but in case they do they should be aware so as not to burn a lot of BD media coasters. That's all.

Another, cheaper option is to use a Unitek Y-1034 cable instead of an external enclosure. This is what I use for my 2nd back-up drive. It converts SATA to USB 3.0 and includes a power adapter.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNITEK-Y-10 ... 1438.l2649
So, basically if I get one cable, like the unitek Y-1039https://www.amazon.com/Unitek-2-5-Inch- ... L41MA?th=1 with power adapter and a WH16NS40 firmware 1.02 I should be fine, correct?

What is better, try the option above or get the BU50N flash drive to BU40N?

In terms of software should I be concern with something?

That cable has a different design than the Y-1034 but looks basically the same otherwise. A cable + internal drive such as WH16NS40 would still probably work out cheaper than a BU50N. All depends on your personal preferences and what you can afford (or want to spend!)

Also, IMO, laptop drives don't seem to be as sturdy and/or reliable as internal desktop drives either.

Software doesn't really matter unless you want to watch UHD's on your PC/laptop. Even if you do, once you have ripped them using MakeMKV, the encryption is removed, so you can use a player such as MPC-HC or VLC etc to watch movies.

Let’s not make assumptions about things based on their appearance because then rumors start and pretty soon it becomes gospel when in reality it’s bullshit :-)

The BU40N drives are plenty strong and to further ensure their safety I ship them in strong little enclosures.

I’ve been stress testing one sans enclosure for weeks now and other then being rather noisy it’s still ripping fast and error free.

Noise is not an issue for me when it’s enclosed.

All,

Older and very confused as to what I need to do, so please be gentle. I have an LG16NS40 v1.03 and an LG16NS60 v1.01. Can anyone point me to a page with instructions on how to either 1) downgrade the FW for either player or 2) cross-flash either player so that one or both of these drives will rip UHD discs with makemkv? I am fairly clear on the keys_hashed file and made sure I have them in the correct data file. I just need a little help in getting one of these players to work for what I need.

Any help is much appreciated!

NOTE: Make certain the WH16NS40 PHYSICAL label reads "SVC code: NS50", or the hardware is too old.

And manual download of HK file was obsolete a few releases back... key retrieval is now automagic.

Thank YOU, d00zah! RE: hashed keys...I told you I was confused! 1) I didn't expect a response that quick. 2) I didn't expect it to be THAT easy!

I followed the link you gave, followed the instructions, downloaded the files, easily rolled back the FW on my WH16NS40 to v.1.02, then rolled back the FW on my WH16NS60 to v.1.00. I inserted a UHD disk, started makeMKV, and the "automagic" began. Once I get this file ripped, I will test it to see how well it streams from PLEX to my UHD HT setup. Seriously, thanks again for such quick and precise help. Another happy customer!

Regards

Glad it worked out, but the real credit should go to those who took the time to make the tools. Thank them. :)

@MartyMcNuts, et.al, I humbly and most sincerely thank you! I just played my first rip streaming from my HTPC in my office via PLEX to my HT setup in the main room over my ethernet backbone - not my favorite movie, but BvS:DOJ looked great, sounded great and didn't miss a single frame. I celebrated and my wife laughed at me and rolled her eyes! I couldn't be happier!

@fizban11,

You're very welcome and that's awesome! Glad you are happy! Sounds like a good setup you have there!
