Guys can yall just update me, will this work:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00Z1LXAJG

And if it does work, is it more or less just plug and play using MakeMKV?
This one unfortunately won't work.

I currently have a WH16NS40 1.02 drive, but I want to get a second drive for backup.

Should I get another WH16NS40 or get a WH16NS60? Does one drive give a better quality rip than the other? Is one faster than the the other?

Thanks for any recommendations.
Remember it's always a good idea, in my opinion, to have an LG and and ASUS around for some of the more pesky discs that won't rip in one but will in the other.

No, this drive won't work. I believe it actually contains a pioneer drive inside. Thus, not compatible.

LG WH16NS60 -
https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-B ... B079LR2Q67
LG WH16NS40 -
https://www.amazon.com/LG-WH16NS40-Inte ... B00E7B08MS
LG BH16NS40 -
https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-B ... B00HQP9FIA

I think I've narrowed down what I want to these 3 drives. and I want to house them in this:
https://www.amazon.com/OWC-Mercury-Opti ... B06XRCCV44

Can someone tell me which one is better to get? Thanks.

While better and best are subjective to some degree the WH16NS60 has more going for it than the other two and now that it's supported by makemkv it's even a better choice, in my opinion.

Yes, definitely get the WH16NS60; it has the added joy of the UltraHD Blu-ray official logo!

I just got my new LG WH16NS60 and USB 3.0 external case in the mail today. I’m quite eager to start ripping 4K movies with it. I’m a bit new to the scene and not entirely sure what is the best firmware type/revision to put on it. My unit came with 1.01 stock on it. If someone could point me in the direction of the proper flasher and a tutorial on how to use it it properly it would be highly appreciated!!! :D

You’ll want the 1.00 firmware and the flashers and that is part of this

It appears the FW in that file is 1.01.....not 1.00. Is that the one that should be used to allow the drive to rip 4k disks? :)

Ah yes, I noticed that after I posted this, my bad. It appears I copied the needed files into this directly when I saved it locally. I can email you the file I use no sweat but won't post it here since there may be a de or mk around that fixes this. Feel free to ping me at alexcoluzzi32@gmail.com

No. You are late to the game to be able to simply get one from Amazon ready to go. Drive manufacturers/vendors caught on months ago.

Reading some of the posts right above yours should have alluded to this fact. Jumping to the last page to post and not doing any reading will not help you and just get you into trouble.

Start by reading this:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=18873

As it contains very helpful information in the first few posts including a “how-to” video created by a member of this forum.

The forum search function also works:

So inform yourself as much as possible to make an educated decision.

Like 18 or so, on the day after that initial "key drop" in December 2017 right? :)

I've just received this drive but I'm not sure if it can be flashed to 1.00 or 1.03 for UHD support

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: hp HLDS
Product: BDRE BU40N
Revision: BW41
Serial number: 642CNxxxxxx
Firmware date: 2116-08-16 15:28
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 31
The sticker label states that it's a UHD Blu-Ray / DVD Writer that was manufactured in Oct 2016.

Also, to flash a drive, I'll need a real SATA connection not via a USB adapter?

I take it, you have already tried a UHD disc with that firmware?

I'm pretty sure I have read somewhere that firmware BW50 works. Maybe that was for a BU50N drive. I can't remember.

Anyway, you can use a SATA / USB adapter (you will also need a SATA / slimline ATA adapter) to flash the drive, but you might be better off using SATA and the old Dosflash method to extract that firmware first.

What I would do:

1. Use SATA connection and old Dosflash method to extract firmware BW41 from your drive.
2. Reboot.
3. Use the modified or patched windows flasher to flash the drive using a SATA / USB adapter to 1.00 and see if it works.

Then, if the drive doesn't work with 1.00, then you can use the old Dosflash method to restore your BW41 firmware.
