Just a note for others in case it's helpful...

I received a 16D1HT from Amazon a couple days ago with firmware 3.00. It ripped 8 out of 8 UHD's with no problem but then hung up on Unforgiven. MakeMKV opened the disc just fine, but ripping either aborted after read errors or just froze on a particular sector with the expected time growing ever higher. Updated to 3.02 and it completed successfully, with considerably higher read rates as well. Evidently, something good for us happened between 3.00 and 3.02. So if you've been holding off of an update and hit read problems, updating to 3.02 may be worth a try.

Does anyone happen to have a firmware file for a WH16NS40 with SVC tag of NS40?

Why are you crossposting the same question ?

Anyway the answer is NO, the NS50 firmware will not work on a NS40 device.

Please help me choose a Drive, I'm on a MacBook Pro, I mostly want rip my CD/DVD and now BluRay collection (mostly normal blurays, not 4k discs but well are welcome), burn? I doubt that I burn... maybe some discs but mostly I need for rip not burn. This drive is an overkill for my needs?

Enclosure vs Ready to use:

1. BW-16D1HT https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DW ... _qh_dp_hza
plus this enclosure Vantec NST-536S3-BK https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR ... 0DER&psc=1

OR

2. Buy the ready external BW-16D1X-U https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VP89X1/re ... B00DWFPDJI

as far I read both drives are the same but one is ready and other needs and enclosure or used in a desktop case of course.

In some way I like the idea of an enclosure if I need in the future replace the drive... but I don't know if trust in that enclosure,
in the other hand I hope not replace the drive in years and the BW-16D1X-U not need an enclosure and is ready to use.

help choose please!!!
thanks!!!

I have this drive in an external usb enclosure connected to a Mac. My firmware is currently 3.00 and I would like to update to 3.02. Is it possible to do this with a Mac? I have Parallels installed and I haven't been able to run the firmware update either from the Mac side or from Windows in Parallels.

Hi, I have a BW-16D1HT. Details as follows:

Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BW-16D1HT
Revision: 3.02
Firmware date: 2117-11-15 17:16:

I thought firmware 3.02 was OK for a UHD friendly drive but when I load my UHD disk Makemkv spins for a few seconds and reports No Disc.

Is this disk failure due to the firmware version?

Are you following Mike’s instructions detailed on this sticky?

What is the disc you are trying to read/rip?

Yes, I believe I am following the instructions OK, I have the latest keys file in my data folder and it has several keys for the UHD I have purchased. From reading this sub-forum my drive should be a UHD friendly one, but the No Disc message suggests it is not actually UHD friendly. If the keys failed then there should be a disc dump created but no such dump is created so I think I am not even able to open the UHD disc. I am using the latest version of MKV.

Any suggestions on the firmware version on my drive? This thread suggests it is OK to the best of my understanding, but I could have misread this. Can anybody confirm that 3.02 should work?

There are a few other posts in this forum--including this thread--where people have reported the same. It was either people forgetting to properly setup the hash key file or a disc issue.

Example: https://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopi ... &start=135

Have you tried replacing the disc?

Have you tried it on a different official UHD or UHD friendly drive?

Is it just this one disc, or are all your UHD disks not being read by the drive?

Yes, that firmware version should be good, as it has been tested by many individuals successfully many times over. I have the same drive, but I am on 3.00.

which enclosure? brand model? please read my post, I want the same thing, or goes for a the ready with no enclosure.

I don't know what's the best idea of both.

Many thanks for the help, much appreciated as there is a lot to work out.

I only have four UHD discs and all of them fail in the same way. If I have understood correctly Makemkv should take a AACS dump if there is a key issue but I get no dumps so it looks like the drive. I can, however, read blu ray fine so the hardware is not faulty.

I have also tried an LG BH16NS55 but this is at firmware 1.03 which is known not to work. With this LG drive I get the same response as the ASUS drive i.e. it spins a few seconds and reports no disc.

If the firmware was OK on my ASUS I was expecting Makemkv to be able to try and open the disc but it cannot even detect a disc is inserted. As this is the same response on my LG drive which is well reported on these forums not to work with firmware 1.03 I suspect the firmware on my ASUS drive. Although it says 3.02 the date is very new so I wonder if there is a silent update on this version.

You could try downgrading to a different version of the firmware to see if it resolves the issue.

https://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopi ... 16&t=17058

Some people have reported that it has resolved read issues when downgrading as well as upgrading. Depending the the issue they have encountered and the firmware version they encountered the issue on.

I have this combo. The first disc I tried to rip was Blade Runner 2049 and it worked fine. The second was The Last Jedi and it fails at the same point every time I try, whether a normal rip or a backup. This seems to be a problem with the disc, not the drive, as others seem to also have the same problem as I do. I will have some more discs to try later this week.

Just got finished with the exact same issue. Brand new out of the box 3.02, manufacture date of 2018 01 26 - would not read UHD discs. Went through TeddyRaspin's guide linked by st4evr to load the "clean" 3.02 using a USB boot stick, and am currently about 40% through a Batman v Superman rip.

Thanks all involved with my solution.
