I can testify to the fact that I only use 3.01 or 3.00. I don't trust multiple releases using the same version numbers :)

Can anyone else vouch for the FW 3.02 blocking certain discs that 3.01 will support?
That's not how this works. Between the two 3.02 firmware revisions released by ASUS either the loophole is present and allows for ripping or it's been patched/fixed and disallows ripping. It's black and white. No gray area where some discs will work and some will not.

You either have the "clean" revision or you don't, in which case you need to downgrade to a previous version or flash the clean revision of 3.02 if you don't.

Thanks for sharing this.

Do you have any instructions for this program? Is it as simple as opening the exe and choosing the firmware file? Do I need to follow any other instructions for this?

First off just want to thank everyone for the info on here, which I've.. erm.. been reading for over two weeks before I joined

I can comfirm what st4ever said above, in answer to chewy, and what a few others on here have said...

There ARE diffent Asus BW-16D1HT drives available supposedly on the same v3.02 f/w release, but Asus must have tweaked the v3.02 at the end of 2017, or the beginning of 2018, and then also realesed it as v3.03 for drives on v3.02 (or earlier) that had the 'un-tweaked' version, as the tweaked version of v3.02 DOES remove the abilty to read UHD pressed discs, just as v3.03 does.

The 1st drive I purchased was the Asus BC-12D2HT from Currys in the UK, and it had the v3.00 f/w on it, and it worked with MakeMKV right out of the box. Then I realsied it wasn't a Blu-ray buner, it only reads Blu-ray and DVD's, but only writes to DVD - and M-Disc, which is what made me think it was a Blu-ray writer

So I then decided to purchase an Asus BW-16D1HT from Amazon, which btw was the OEM version in a retail box, not the retail version in a retail box :? It is the same drive, but the variant is "90DD0200-B28000" for model number, and when I installed it, it MakeMKV rerported it had v3.02 f/w :D

Put in a DVD and it could see all the vob's, even under Windows 10 File Manager, same for a Blu-Ray could see all the video files, the full file structure, but put in a UHD disc... spun for a few seconds, stopped... nothing, no disc inserted, under Windows 10 File Manager or MakeMKV.

What I did notice, was when I ran MakeMKV, when I seleteced the BC-12D2HT it said "Highest AACS version: xx" under the right window, when I selected the BW-16D1HT... it didn't.

After reading everything on here, I decide to flash the drive to v3.00 f/w, using the (Windows Method) on this great guide on here : viewtopic.php?f=16&t=17058 and the 'Clean' v3.00 f/w from here the 1st link from Badnews in the last posts here: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=17058

Worked like a charm :) The BW-16D1HT now reports as v3.00 f/w in MakeMKV and reads UHD discs without a problem, and again I can see the entire file strucure in Windows 10 File Manger :D

Did a full rip of Star Trek Beyond UHD HDR to Mkv, and streamed it back from my NAS drive to my Panasonic 4k TV.

So once again, many thanks to all, I hope this helps anyone else who has the same problem I did.

Now all I've got to do is find a good solution for burining the Mkv to 50Gb discs, as a Blu-ray... more digging methinks.

Howdy all. Found some good info that led me to picking up this Asus drive. It's a newer drive, made in early 2018 which I assume is the "fixed" 3.02 FW. Took the 3.01 FW and following viewtopic.php?f=16&t=17058...I seem to have an issue in that it's been bricked.

Won't power up at all at the moment, and bringing it back to the other PC used to flash does nothing...which doesn't make a lot of sense. Can't say I've ever seen one not even power up in this context. Not be recognized, sure, but not...nothing.

I'd flashed it once before using the BH14NS40_N1.00-A4_patched file found elsewhere on the site, but that didn't have any effect in that UHD disks were still not being seen.

I'm guessing this isn't recoverable at this stage, but am open to suggestions.

TIA

With all the ASUS love going on you'd think so, but no, it's just the only firmware in the market that's worth using :-)

thanks, I thought buy this: https://www.amazon.com/Computer-Interna ... +BW-16D1HT

but just two questions:

1. $100 ouch! is not cheap for a drive... that's the regular price? is not possible get it for less money?
2. ok that amazon link is the correct one? I mean if I buy it from Amazon why I get, I get the 2015+, I read some reviews of people that get a actual firmware but they just go back and works.

by the way, I'm on mac and I use my drives with this enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NST-536S3 ... 4457YMMDDD I hope the ASUS BW-16D1HT works well, I have other Asus DVD drive and works well here.

Any help? I'm new, and I looking for info to buy the right BluRay Drive.

You can find it here.
Lots of information on downgrading. I just purchased my drive (BW-16D1HT) on amazon retail box. It seems to come with 3.03. Does this firmware work as a standalone firmware down grade or do i still have to get a dump and modify 3.02 firmware to a test.bin?

Thanks

You have to dump your 3.03 firmware first and then use the hex edit method in order to properly accomodate needed data into 3.02 bin file and flash it.

I'm having some trouble with my BW-16D1HT, I bought it a long time ago so I have a really old version of the firmware:

Drive Information
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BW-16D1HT
Revision: 1.01
Serial number: K9JF15G5815
Firmware date: 2113-02-05 19:30
Bus encryption flags: 1F

I've tried several UHD-discs but all makemkv says is "no disc" and I can't open it. Anyone knows if it does work in this old revision or will I have to upgrade to a later version but not the latest?
