Hey guys,

This is what I need "Optical BD drive that doesn't cap at 2.2x" Mac OS X.

I tried several today and they all capped at 2.2x. The one I own is an old Samsung BDDVDW SE-506AB, works fine but SLOW.

So, any suggestions?

/Stew

How long did you watch it?

My "slow" drive is maybe 2x at the start, but it will get up to 8x as it moves further out on the disk. Faster drives (my LGs for example) can ht 10-15x on some titles, but they start out at 1-2x on the titles closer to the hub (start of disk).

Some (most?) LG drives leave the factory with "quiet mode", which is also referred to as "riplock", set to "on". When they detect video, they limit speed to keep the drive quiet, at least that's what the propaganda in the packaging says. It can be turned of... If you have the right utility, which USED to ship with the drives.

I watched it all the way to the end mate, 2.2x is the limit. I have a new Mac Mini 6 core i7, it takes 9 minutes to encode to 6000 kpbs MKV after I've used "makemkv" to copy the disc.

If I have a faster drive then it's worth it but I need to know 100% what I should buy.

That is a rather old drive (last firmware update 2012). It's actually kind of fortunate that it is limiting its speed, because it would run in to power issues if it didn't - it cannot sustain full speed on just a single USB power powering it, and it would probably go off-line at about 4-5x speed, mid-rip.

It has two USB so no problem there

I got a new Asus BW-16D1HT ( manufactured 2020-01 ) and for BR I'm getting 4.5 to 5.5x rip speed. This is with stock 3.10 firmware. I don't intend on modifying it since the speed is ok with me and I don't intend to rip UHD since my 1080p TV is not going to be replaced for a couple of years more.

From your post you’re using a USB powered Slim Samsung BD drive. I’m not a technician but I think USB BD drives has heavy CPU usage and it also consumes your computer’s resources. In other words, the external slim drive does not have its own power source and it’s using the power of your computer causing the slow read speed. The laser lens, plows thru the disc, data travels thru the cable then to your HD involves passing thru many channels.

Try getting a bigger 5.25 blu-ray drive with it’s own power adapter so it does not consume your computers’ power. Note that the ripping speed is slightly faster between 2x to 6x+. Ripping 40gb to 60gb of high resolution data from a spinning disc is a huge PC task.

This is an old post but it relates to USB optical drive causing heavy CPU usage.

It's going to be a fun experience and MakeMKV is a great app.
