LG WH14NS40 flashed to WH16NS60 1.02MK - Only reads BD but not DVD

Post by tiny_pie »

I just bought a new LG WH14NS40 and flashed it to WH16NS60 1.02MK and enabled unlimited read speed via the Windows registry edit. Blu-ray rips work great with read speeds up to over 50 MB/s. However, the drive will not recognize any of the DVDs I've tried. Not just MakeMKV, the OS (Windows 10) doesn't recognize there's any disc inserted into the drive. I've verified that it's not the DVDs, because I have a portable USB DVD drive, and it reads the same DVDs just fine. Any idea what might the issue be?

It never did. But then again, I didn't try any DVDs before I flashed it to 1.02MK.

you can flash to WH14NS40 firmware to be sure and if does not read them exchange it for a new one because its defective
i have had many bad experiences with desktop lg/asus drives i wont touch them anymore the quality control is horrible i wasted so much time exchanging those things instead of shipping them out

Sure, will try that. Do you have a brand/model that you do recommend?

Got it, thanks! The BU40N looks like a slim drive. Those always feel fragile to me, like I might accidentally break the door if I'm not careful. Any recommendations for a standard 5.25" drive?

nope all the 5.25 that are UHD friendly are basically the same for now and just rebrands or an aacs 2.x chip added. i personally wouldn't touch them ever again got over 50 bad ones
pioneer drives might be added in the future but not yet

Ok, I flashed it to WH14NS40 1.04 MK. Still won't read DVD :( Guess this one is a dud.

Some people have trouble with DVD’s and MakeMKV 1.15.2. Have you tried going back to 1.15.1?
Cheers :D

It's not just MakeMKV. Windows doesn't even detect there is a disc inserted.

I've requested a replacement drive. Will report back if that fixes the issue. If not, then I'll probably try the drive billy recommended next.

UPDATE: Replacement drive received. It is able to read DVD as well as BD (and 4K BD once flashed to 1.02MK).

I did encounter another weird issue: neither drives could read the Pearl Harbor Blu-Ray disc that I have. Couldn't read it in my Xbox One S and PS3 either. The disc surface looks pristine. I could have sworn I played it once just fine when I first got it years ago. Not sure what the problem is.

Well that's good glad you got a working drive.

When stuff like that happens it's best to clean the disc.

What's the best way to clean a disc? I was just wiping it with a microfiber cloth.
