MakeMKV cannot see new LG BU40N drive

Post by morbius »

I just added an LG BU40N to my optical drive collection. It's connected to an Intel NUC running Win10 via a USB-slimline SATA lead. Windows can see the drive, and applications such as dbpoweramp can see discs that are loaded. But makemkv cannot find a useable drive when it opens. Likewise, the SDF flashing tool cannot find a useable drive either.

My "daily driver" is a desktop ASUS in an OWC USB enclosure, and that works fine with makemkv.

Any suggestions as to why makemkv cannot see the drive, when other apps can?

Here is a log during start up, failing to find a drive (all is good at the OS level, Windows Device Manager shows a connected HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N USB Device)

And here is a clean start with my ASUS drive, again showing in Windows as a USB optical drive.

Out of curiosity, what happens if you start MakeMKV as an administrator with the bu40n?

Running as administrator gives the same result. Could this be the cheap USB cable? If other Windows programs can see the drive, I would have thought that makemkv should at least see it. I have a Vantec enclosure on order, but it might be a couple of weeks away.

It's possible, but, if Windows can see it MakeMKV should be able to, as well. The only thing that comes to mind is if some filters are interfering for some weird reason but I don't know if that's what's happening here.

I've now connected the LG drive to two other Win10 PC's in the house, and in all cases, makemkv hangs when it opens

But in all cases, Windows has a good device connection at the OS level, e.g. from my Intel NUC, all apps apart from makemkv are good (e.g. Foobar2000, dbpoweramp etc).

Ok the real question is not if windows sees the drive.
It is when you put a disc in does windows see it?

example of the LG drive working perfectly. I haven't found any app apart from makemkv that can't use the drive.

But does windows see a Blu-ray
Cd and Blu-ray use different lasers and perhaps a different way to talk to the pc because many usb to sata converters don't fully support optical disc drives and that seems to be whats happing with not being able to flash it and makemkv not seeing it

Sure, loading a bluray works fine. Windows asks me which program I want to use. Here is a shot of Imgburn having read all the details on a bluray disc. In the top right, you can see it's happily talking to the LG 1.04 via USB.

MakeMKV works fine with two ASUS drives I have when they are connected via USB, one in an OWC enclosure, the other via an AGPtek USB/SATA interface, so MakeMKV has no problem with seeing those USB connections, but it will not see the LG.

Hmm yeah that's quite strange maybe makemkv has some weird incompatibility with that usb chipset.

Mike has fixed problems like that before on the nforce sata chipsets so it may be fixable but really it's probably better to just buy one from my list that is known to work with flashing so even if makemkv sees the drive you probably won't be able to flash it.
You can hook that drive to to your other cases with a sata to slim sata adapter to test.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I do have a Vantec enclosure on order but there’s quite a lead time on delivery.

I have not been able to find a SATA to slim SATA adapter, can you recommend one? I found a mini SATA adapter but the plug end was too large for the drive.
