BU40N putting circular scratches on some discs.

Post by jamisonia »

Been having an issue recently where my LG BU40N fails to rip 4k discs with hash errors then the disc comes out with circular scratches. These discs are brand new and rendered unusable. I've tried cleaning the drive, which didn't help. The drive is only a few months old. Is this potentially a firmware issue?

No get rid of that drive and ask lg to pay for your replacement discs it's not caused by firmware it a drive hardware problem.

Yep I've been in touch with jonghotti and went ahead and purchased a WH14NS40 while its sorted out.

To give more details for anyone else who might be interested I've had this drive since March. Its ripped scores of 4K and BDs. I believe it scratched by BTTF Bonus disc in October, but I wasn't sure if it was dirty, or if maybe came that way. I didn't look super hard, and since it was the Bonus Disc I didn't really care. But it has the same circular scratches.

I just set up an SMB server. When I rip to the SMB server directly with this drive it will scratch the discs every time. If I rip to my local SSD or to USB HDDs it doesn't scratch. I think this might have had to do with advance power management Open Media Vault was doing to the drives which was slowing down the transfer speed in the middle of the rip and causing the drive to outpace the transfer. Nevertheless I don't think this should have caused the BU40N to physically scratch the discs. Maybe people who know more than me can answer why that may be. But this is why I thought it might have been firmware related.

Anyway thanks for everyone's help.

That's just a mechanical problem. Not related to any software setup.

Problem with the drive, yes, not sure yet if it’s hardware, software, firmware or personnel :-)
