What Billycar11 says is true. He is a guru so it's a good idea to believe him. But if you (or others) are asking the question to yourself "why?" AND "how can someone tell?" The only real way is to actually look at the optical drive itself. On the drive you may see a "SVC" code with numbers following the SVC designation. If the SVC code is less than 50 you have one strike against. Now the next part to see is when the drive was manufactured. If the manufacture date is before (mid) 2015, then the drive is NOT flashable. Now before someone starts the alarms, let me state this - if the drive has a SVC code of 40 (or lower) it's not flashable because everything I've seen/read states such.

Now you might be asking yourself, "Yeah but how did Billycar11 know as he didn't actually see my drive?" True, but there is a clue. Do you see the line that reads "Drive platform: MT1939"? That MT1939 stands for Mediatek 1939 chipset and that chipset is not really compatible (currently) with the firmware files available for use to flash. The supported drives that allow flashing show "Drive platform: MT 1959" BUT (HUGE BUT), one still has to check the SVC code (typically 50 or above) AND the date of manufacture (Typically past 2015) to be absolutely sure. So a correlation could be made that Drive platform MT 1939 is NOT flashable while Drive platform MT 1959 is flashable for the LG line of drives (other manufactures have other requirements). Not doing any of the three (3) (Opening case, physically checking the drive for model, date, AND SVC code) will almost certainly guarantee the optical drive being bricked.

Granted, it's very confusing as most people just state their drive is a WH16NS40. Yep, and there is the confusion, that's only half the information needed. Seems LG used the same model number BUT changed the Mediatek chipset from 1939 to 1959. Now if the drive was used "Normally", most might have never noticed (similar to how car manufactures changes internal car parts for a given model from one year to the next). But, to the trained person, this is a HUGE difference and in the case of the MT1959 an exploitable feature became available.

IMO, something needs to be done to standardize the drive identity from WH16NS40 to something like WH16NS40 - NS50 or WN16NS40 - SVC:NS50 for example (Like car manufactures do 2019 vs 2020 model OR whatever model with a V6 vs a V4 - you get the idea). Hopefully it will happen, but only time will actually tell if people will go the extra step in the ID process.

Have a great day,
A

1939 was a very bad year. 1959 was much much better :)
