Any chance this will work with a old BD/HDDVD drive?

Drive Information
OS device name: G:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE GGW-H20L
Revision: YL07
Serial number: K5491E01557
Firmware date: 2011-03-19 12:34:56
Highest AACS version: 36

I can't test it right now as the serial and the version aren't lined up for the beta but I thought I would ask as it isn't mentioned anywhere in the intro post.

Somewhere between slim and none, since the drive is nearly 5 years older than the oldest drives that are LD-compatible.

I'm trying to rip the 4K UHD version of Parasite from the disc, but when I open up MakeMKV 1.15.1, it says it cannot open the disc. Is LibreDrive the solution?
No, the volume key is likely not known for your version of the disc.

viewforum.php?f=12

There are threads for USA & Canada versions of the disc. There doesn't seem to be support for either at the moment.

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BDDVDRW UH12NS30
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: K9LE9OD4329
Firmware date: 2114-03-26 11:41
Bus encryption flags: 16
Highest AACS version: 68
Using v6 causes my OS to drop the drive when attempting to decrypt the disc causing MakeMKV to also crash.

I get the 'OS error - This device does not exist' error until MakeMKV crashes. I then have to power off the PC before the drive is recognized again.

My drive was originally Revision 1.03. I tried flashing down to 1.02 to see if that would resolve the issue but it didn't.

I've tried 3 discs, all Blu-ray. They were Onward, Frozen 2 and Jumanji 2. All had the same behavior after tried to decrypt and all discs were able to be ripped when not using LibreDrive v6.

I just gave this a shot today and the first thing I tried to rip was a really old DVD (Stargate SG1 Season 1 Disc 5). It failed to open the disc entirely, reporting a SCSI error, and then the drive locked up and I was unable to eject the disc. I removed the V6 bin from the data tar file and rebooted the machine/recycled power and things were back to normal.

I realize this is an edge case since most people are far more concerned with blu-ray discs than DVD (as I usually am too!) but thought I'd mention it.

I've been using MakeMKV a long time with a very old Blu-Ray drive, an ASUS brand BW-12B1ST a with 1.0 firmware that never got any firmware updates since I've had it. I figured the drive was so old it would never be supported. Just this morning while poking around I saw there was a LibreDrive v6 update from May which actually supports my ancient drive so grabbed the bin file and put it in my data folder, restarted and ta-da!

So then just for thrills I tried it out and the closest Blu-Ray I had handy, Annabelle Comes Home. Just about every Blu-ray I rip with this drive takes about 30min or so before the LibreDrive update. I had already ripped this Blu-ray a long time ago and it probably took about as long. After doing the LibreDrive update re-ripping this Blu-ray took nearly 1 hour and 16 minutes. Was there something else I should have done? Or is something else going wrong? The file it created looks great and has no issues, just that it took 2.5 times as long to make. Any ideas?

My log file reads as follows:

Yep I get a similar result with my UH12NS30 also:

I left makemkv whirring away for a bit (attempting to open a BD disc) and it eventually gave me an error (fatal error?).
anyways I have reverted back so I can rip a disc but please see attached my log file which might be of some help?

FYI the disc I was attempting to open in the log worked just fine after reverting back to 1.15.1 (linux), libredrive status returned to "Status: Possible, not yet enabled".

Cheers.

Is it possible that the increased speeds could potentially destroy discs? I had a Bluray disc just literally explode in my LG drive into a million pieces. It had trouble reading the disc and was constantly adjusting the spin speed and then eventually heard a loud POP inside the drive like a gun after about an hour.

Was it spinning or was it grinding? Not sure it was the best idea to let it sit there for an hour having trouble with the disc. To answer your question though yes I believe that increased speeds could wreck all sorts of havoc including damaged discs and drives that fail prematurely. There's a reason I jokingly referred to this feature as "the warranty killer" :)

Yes, it is possible to have a disk come apart because of existing defects, as you've experienced. There are even Youtube videos of CDs with cracks coming apart at full speed, dating back to the last century, when "40x" became a thing.

Disks with ANY sort of stress discoloration or visible nicks and cracks should NOT be spun at high speed.

It was spinning, no grinding. I left it in because it was still ripping the movie, albeit very slowly. I've never had a disc disintegrate like that before in my life so had no worries.

Yeah, I check each disc very carefully before ripping. There were some minor scratches but no cracks were visible.

It would be good if the next version of MakeMKV gives us the option to disable unrestricted speeds. 99.9% of the time there's no issue, but that 0 .1% chance of an optical grenade now has me paranoid. :o

Fortunately, I disassembled the drive, cleaned out the debris and seems like I was able to salvage it. Fingers crossed. I'll be removing the new bin file however to limit the rip speed.

LOL "optical grenade"! I mean, it's not funny, but it's a clever name.

You know, it's a bit strange that we have one group desiring the removal of the speed restrictions, and another needing to limit speeds for reasons like available USB power or fragile media.

My BD copy of Last Starfighter has a section of the hub missing, but it survived 3 rips.

I'm 100% in the FASTER FASTER FASTER! category, however, having CONTROL over the max speed by a drop down selection or some other mechanism would be helpful.
