Very slow reads on blu-rays

I'm running High Sierra Beta and getting VERY slow read speeds on any disk (tops out at 22.2 K/s).
The "analyzing seamless segments" takes about 20 minutes, then it creates the MKV at about the same speed.
The drive is a Matshita UJ-210S 1.00d.
It's using direct access mode.
I get Error 'Scsi error - NO SENSE:NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION' occurred while issuing SCSI command A40..0020..0FF to device 'IoKit:IOBDServices:f3d30a56213ca494:MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ-210S 1.00' right off the bat, then it runs slowly.
I can read blu-rays through handbrake just fine after I copied the Makemkv libraries as suggested here. I just have issues running MakeMKV as standalone.
Any ideas?

Solved the problem by getting a new drive. LG BP50NB40. Works like a charm. Got read speeds around 3x to 4x.
