Subtitles issues in 480p and 720p

Post by Sydon »

Hello,

I ripped Candyman DVD in 480p and 720p but the subtitles do not display correctly. They are not properly scaled for those resolutions. For example, the 480p ones tended to take up almost a quarter of the screen space with some words not being displayed if people had a long conversation. The 720p subtitles displayed to the right of center and took some screen space as well but not as bad as the 480p ones.

I tried with another movie and the problem was the same...

How can I re-scale the subtitles in lower resolution formats?

Thanks,
Smithcraft

As SC implies with his question, DVDs are 480i, so you must be doing some form of re-encoding if you're getting a different resolution, OR you're not using standard commercial DVDs as the source.

MakeMKV does not change the resolution of the video or subtitle streams.

I have seen the exact issue you report on some Malaysian- and Chinese-sourced DVDs, which had "aftermarket" subtitles added to video recorded off of analog TV channels.
