I'm struggling to back up the movie: Seventh Seal.

When I attempt to preview it using Apple's DVD Player or VLC, both quickly lock up long before showing the play Menu. If I leave Apple DVD Player alone, it will ultimately show the play Menu. Once I click Play, it locks up again for several minutes, but eventually it will ultimately play. Initially I thought that there was a problem with the disk, so I exchanged it for another, but the new one does the same exact thing.

Loading the disc into MakeMKV, it opens just fine and shows the correct Title & Chapters. But when I select it, and attempt to back it up, it throws "Read Errors." This movie is a "Criterion Collection" release.

All of them are struggling with the unreadable parts of the disk. VLC and Apple DVD eventually move on and play what they can, but MakeMKV stops because it's unable to make a complete copy.

Cleaning the disk may help.

This is a brand new disk; no dust, no scratches, pristine. I had the same issue with the first disk and exchanged it. This disk is doing the same exact thing.

"Exactly the same thing" can mean a mastering error.

But "brand new disk; no dust, no scratches, pristine" really doesn't mean much; If you read through this topic, I've tried to capture pictures of "new pristine" disks that won't rip because of the not-quite-transparent chemical deposits from the packaging. My eyes didn't see the deposits, and the camera can't focus on them, but the drive couldn't see past them, and cleaning a portion of the disk made it obvious to the eye that there was an issue.

DVDs are FAR less susceptible to the deposits than BD and UHD, because the bits on the disk are larger. But it can happen. Not to mention I went through multiple replacements of Hercules, with the exact same unreadable sector on disk out of the set, both new and ones rented from Netflix. I finally broke out an old DVD-only player. After some struggle, it was able to read that sector and allowed me to have all the episodes.
