Scratchy Sound from Music Videos

Post by ToHe2307 »

Hi,

I want to make MKVs from three (original) discs with music videos to have it available within my network. When I play the videos directly from disc, everything is fine. When I play the MKV, the sound is scratchy. It is not a joy to listen then. I tried several times with the different profiles (default, FLAC, AAC,WDTV) and from two different drives (dvd and br), but everytime the same result.

This is the information from the audio layer with different profiles:

Default:
Typ: Audio
Name: Stereo
Sprache: English
Codec: Linear PCM
Kanäle: 2
Channel layout: stereo
Abtastrate: 48000
Bits pro Sample: 24
Output format: Raw LPCM audio without channel configuration metadata ( Lossless conversion )
Output description: Save as raw LPCM
MKV Flags: Default

AAC-Stereo:
Typ: Audio
Flags: Profile-defined secondary stream
Name: Stereo
Sprache: English
Codec: Linear PCM → AAC
Kanäle: 2
Channel layout: stereo
Abtastrate: 48000
Bits pro Sample: 24
Output format: AAC audio ( Lossy conversion )
Output description: Save as Mpeg-4 AAC-LC
MKV Flags: Default

FLAC:
Typ: Audio
Name: Stereo
Sprache: English
Codec: Linear PCM → FLAC
Kanäle: 2
Channel layout: stereo
Abtastrate: 48000
Bits pro Sample: 24
Output format: FLAC audio ( Lossless conversion )
Output description: Save as FLAC (fast compression)
MKV Flags: Default

WDTV:
Typ: Audio
Name: Stereo
Sprache: English
Codec: Linear PCM
Kanäle: 2
Channel layout: stereo
Abtastrate: 48000
Bits pro Sample: 24
Output format: Raw LPCM audio without channel configuration metadata ( Lossless conversion )
Output description: Save as raw LPCM
MKV Flags: Default

Anybody any ideas?

Thank you :-)

I'm having the same problem with a music video DVD (Best of Donna Summer video collection) with LPCM audio (the only available audio track). The DVD is perfect, and it plays back perfectly on standalone DVD player, and in Macos DVD Player and streaming through VLC. When I rip the DVD with MakeMKV, the resulting mkv file plays back in VLC with garbled LPCM audio, like you described "scratchy sound". If I reencode the mkv to mp4 with aac audio, it still sounds scratchy.

Track information
Type: Audio
Name: Stereo
Language: English
Codec: Linear PCM
Channels: 2
Channel layout: stereo
Sample rate: 48000
Bits per sample: 24
Output format: Raw LPCM audio without channel configuration metadata ( Lossless conversion )
Output description: Save as raw LPCM

Edit: I gave up and used Ripit, and encoded to mp4... no issues, everything sounds perfect. Not sure what the problem is with MakeMKV and LPCM.

What's strange:

When I use such a "scratchy file" and hunt it through Plex with transcoding... everything is fine again. Do I stream it through Plex without coding, then it is scratchy again. (I hope everybody understands what I mean, when I write "scratchy")

But transcoding should only be the very last option (for me) ;-)
