Full disk backup fails but no helpful error. Debug log avail

I have a Blu-ray disk with 2 encrypted .m2ts files (created by my Panasonic Blu-ray PVR) which I am trying to decrypt via MakeMKVs 'full disk backup' feature (MakeMKV 1.10.7 on macOS 10.13 High Sierra. All starts off okay but then after just a short time I get the error 'Backup failed'. Nothing else :-( Here is the debug log...

Did you say you created this disk? It appears that it was not properly closed, and has directory errors:
001002:0020 LIBMKV_TRACE: UDF mount: file system is not clean;
005072:0000 Backing up disc into folder "/Volumes/External/Video/MakeMKV/backup/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER"
001002:0020 LIBMKV_TRACE: UDF mount: file system is not clean;
That is HIGHLY unusual for a commercial disk.

Does the disk contain all the directories required for an encrypted BD?

Normally, a PVR would not encrypt the video.

Yes, we simply used the 'copy to disk' function in our PVR. The files were FreeView HD broadcasts which were recorded. These are encrypted and it is normal for the .m2ts files on the copied disk to also be encrypted. In the past we were able to extract/decrypt these files using a Windows machine with AnyDVD but sadly that great utility is no longer supported and no longer works :-( I was hoping that I could use MakeMKV to achieve the same purpose (we already use it a lot to rip commercial disks for use with our media server).

I created a new disk, formatting it first in the PVR, and copying just one item to the disk. MakeMKV still shows the 'file system is not clean' errors but the backup completes without error. Sadly, even though I had ticked 'Decrypt video files' the .m2ts file in the backup is still encrypted...

I'd really like for this to work.

The PVR should have a function to "close" the disk after it has been written to. Without doing that, the disk will not have a valid directory.

Also, if the m2ts files are encrypted, there MUST be an AACS directory on the disk, with the information about the encryption, or MakeMKV is not going to be able to decrypt it.

The copy mode we are using doesn't have the option to close the disc. Other modes may but they also down-convert the video and take hours to copy just one item. The file-system is in fact fine - MacOS can read the disk perfectly with no issues so that is something of a red herring. Windows/AnyDVD also used to be able to read these disk without issue. There is an AACS directory on the disk (I was going to upload an image that shows all the directories and files but I get an error saying that the board's attachment quota has been reached...). MakeMKV successfully processes the disk and copies the .m2ts file (it has the same size after copying as it has on the disk) but the data in the file is still encrypted even though I ticked 'Decrypt video files' in the backup dialogue. I would have thought that if MakeMKV encountered a problem, such as some critical file missing, then it would give an error. Any possibility this is a bug?

AnyDVD still exists (use it myself), now owned by RedFox, Slysoft's former software development team. https://www.redfox.bz/.

Question about your Panasonic PVR player since I'm not familiar with it; the unit has the ability to create blu-ray discs with full blu-ray BDAV structure? Does it allow you to copy a commercial blu-ray disc to a BD-RE disc? Or is it to archive a recorded show on the PVR onto a BD-RE? Does it add encryption or carry over the encryption of the recorded program? Pardon the ignorance, just curious.

Hi yorgo, thanks for the pointer to AnyDVD!

With regard to my PVR, it has a limited ability to create DVD and Blu-ray dies with full structure but I never use that feature because the look and feel of those disk (menus etc.) is pretty poor and they all involve major processing of the video which takes hours. The unit does *not* allow the copying of commercial titles to the hard disk or to other optical media. The function I am using to create these disks is one that is intended to allow you to archive recorded programmes from the internal hard disk to (re)writeable optical media. Later you can watch the programmes direct from the optical media or copy them back to the internal HDD. This 'copy' function can do a raw as-is copy or many types of down-conversion. The advantage of the 'raw' copy is that it is (a) fast and (b) it preserves exactly the original recorded material and if the original was encrypted for transmission then the copied files are also encrypted. I don't know if the unit preserves the transmission encryption or adds its own instead, sorry. We record a lot of stuff from FreeView HD channels; most of this stuff is encrypted so the copies made to disk are also encrypted. AnyDVD is able to decrypt the files on these disk without problem. Since we now use exclusively Macs (apart from one Windows VM) I was looking for a Mac based solution and MakeMKV seemed like it might be it (we already use it for many years to RIP DVDs and Blu-ray disks).

The files/structure on an 'archive' disk created by the PVR is:

AACS
AACS/AACS_av
AACS/AACS_av/CPSUnit00001.cci
AACS/AACS_av/Unit_Key_RW.inf
AACS/MKB_RW.inf
BDAV
BDAV/CLIPINF
BDAV/CLIPINF/00001.clpi
BDAV/info.bdav
BDAV/PLAYLIST
BDAV/PLAYLIST/00001.rpls
BDAV/STREAM
BDAV/STREAM/00001.m2ts

So it seems there is AACS data of some kind on the disk. Not sure why MakeMKV seems to backup the disk okay but does not decrypt the .m2ts file(s).

You might want to go through the steps in the FAQ in my signature, and send the information to support@makemkv.com for Mike to look at.

Not sure what he'll do about it, but he will ask you if he needs other information.

Hello,
First thanks for making this wonderful MakeMKV program, which allows me to copy cartoons, which I record from TV channels, to a tablet, for the kids to watch when travelling.
Having said that, I have exactly the same problem as mentioned in this thread, with MakeMKV 1.10.8 on a Mac.

I tried with MakeMKV 1.10.8 on Windows, and it does work fine, with the same self-recorded BDAV Blu-Ray on a Panasonic DMR Blu-Ray recorder, and with the same external Blu-Ray drive connected to the computer.

Did you already receive more information for this problem ?
Or you need more information ? Is it enough to send a raw copy of the BDAV directory, or you need a full ISO ?
I can record only a few seconds of video, to keep the file short.

Edit : I tried to burn an ISO, but the ISO is missing the Volume ID.
Is there a way to send a sample other than a physical media by the post ?

Thanks in advance,
Regards,

metatech

Hello,

I found out why the first few seconds of copying the track succeed, but it fails afterwards.
When recording a show, the anti-copy signal (DVB-CPCM) is not present in the first few seconds of the recording, probably because it is not transmitted permanently on the broadcast, but only at some interval of a few seconds. If I edit the track, and strip the 10 seconds of the show, before burning it to a Blu-Ray, MakeMKV fails immediately (on Mac, not on PC) when copying the track.

Regards,

metatech

Hello, for information, the same BD-RE works perfectly in MakeMKV for Linux, with the same self-recorded BDAV Blu-Ray on a Panasonic DMR Blu-Ray recorder, and with the same external Blu-Ray drive connected to the computer.

I tried again with MakeMKV 1.12.2 on Mac and it works fine now !
Thanks !
