I held off asking this n00b question as long as I could stand it, but I give up now...

Nowhere in the MakeMKV program do I see a reference to "MPLS" or "Playlists", so I haven't a clue how to make use of the suggestions in this forum – such as "00619.mpls being correct" – when ripping challenging Blu-Ray discs.

Thought I had earned my "Advanced Mode" badge, guys - backed up dozens of DVD and BD before! - but I admit defeat with "Bombshell (2019)", and the Googlez aren't helping me thru this basic question.

HOW DO I LEAD MAKEMKV TO THE "CORRECT" MAIN TITLE?

Background: Running latest rev. 1.15.0, I've got the disc in, I can "Open Disc..." no sweat, I see no mention of Java (though it is installed correctly in Windows 10). So far so good... the Titles get listed (showing # of Chapter(s), etc.), but saving the "biggest" (2.6GB) title nabs me the "Making of..." which isn't the Main Title. This is where my mind fries: I don't know how to "knit" the contents into a working backup.

Highlight a title in the left-hand pane & observe 'Title Information' in the 'Info' pane (mid-right).
Segment Count/Map & other salient details displayed there.

When multiple (potentially fake) titles are displayed, you may need to visually match a reported .mpls/segment map by examining each title.

When you find the one you want, select ONLY that title & rip it.

Many thanks, as I felt like a dork asking.

Meanwhile, I've done my due diligence and scoured the Interwebz for more enlightenment on all things .mpls, and have since (re)discovered things like Process Monitor (procmon); using it to find 'real' playlists; the value of having a good player like VLC installed (although most tutorials seem to prefer PowerDVD for some reason?); backing up BD discs to HD in order to create/view/edit BDMV folders, etc.

Kind of a steep learning curve for the average Joe, no question, but I will immerse myself further. Just was about to throw in the towel, or wouldn't have posted my whine earlier, lol.

While we're here... what series of button presses would I do in MakeMKV to "backup" the entirety of a BD to HD, anyway? (I'm assuming one begins by inserting the disc, and maybe turning off "Skip if shorter than ___" by setting that to '0', but the actual workflow doesn't spring to mind. Yet it's often mentioned so cavalierly in the Forum.)

Again, thanks(!) from this old-timer. Back when we watched everything on VHS and were happy to pay Blockbuster the extra $1 "rewind" fee!

With disc in drive, start MakeMKV. Make sure the drive containing the disc is selected (IF you have multiple ODDs) & without scanning the disc, select 'File' > 'Backup'. It'll present a dialogue allowing you to:

- select an output directory
- select whether to decrypt, or not. users save encrypted backups when a UHD key is currently unavailable, to be processed later. largely depends on how you intend to use the backup.

And the other question I have had for a while, why is the java add on inside of MakeMKV always wrong?

PowerDVD is used because VLC player cannot play a commercially stamped encrypted Blu-ray.

I came up with 442.mpls for the US Bombshell (Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital) (UPC: 031398315667)

Segment Map: 510, 505, 504, 502, 512, 508, 501, 503, 511, 507

I have not done a side by side to confirm it yet.

I extracted both the 942.mpls (which my java said was the main feature) and 619.mpls (which the first post said was the correct file for rental (I have a netflix disc). I ran both side by side along with the actual bluray playing in a third window. I didn't watch every second, but did check back every 10-15 minutes so see how things synced up. By halfway through the movie, it was obvious that the bluray matched 619, so this seems to be another case where the java got it wrong (been seeing more of that this year, maybe it's just me).

Not just you. I noted in the other "Bombshell" thread that the java got it wrong as well.

Just watched the 619 version all the way through last night, finally. This seems to be the correct version since no obvious discontinuities were noticeable.
