battlestar galactica which file is the menu?

Post by kyrill »

I bought the newest version of Battlestar galactica complete edition
Image

I only need the menu you see as a first when playing the BD disc and of course the movie. All extra's around it I do not need or want.

But how do I recognize which file on the disk(s) is the menu?

I hope you know :)

The only way to have the menu is to rip as a "backup". MKV files do not store menus.

It depends on if you mean the menu itself as a navigable thing, in which case Woodstock's answer applies, or if for whatever reason you're interested in the elements that the menu is composed of.

If the menu has video running in the background, that video will be on the disc.

In some rare cases, the video of the menu background will have the text rendered as part of it. The LOST television series is one example.

I had not thought about the video behind the menu... Those generally will require the Minimum Title length to be reduced, as they rarely exceed the default 120 seconds.

thx guys but also bad news. The menu put some order in all these 22 disks files The discs are full of "MKV"entries , very hard to decide which one to copy on disk and which one not. There are entries over 20 gig that looks 100% identical to the last MB, so why are they on the same disks as twins?
and the time order to watch them is also hard to find as they seem not be ordered in a logical sequence ppff

To rip as back up is it possible after having done this to remove redundant files of teh backup? redundant meaning all the extra's not part of the main content

Welcome to the world of TV discs, you’ll have to work though the content to determine what’s what, and what order it goes in. I can’t remember for sure but including/excluding Japanese language options may be duplicate playlists in this set. I seem to remember that some episodes have alternate extended versions too?

I have the UK edition of this, if the discs are the same, I might be able to make a big list.

I think you would run into problems if you try to go the backup route and delete stuff out of it, but then again, I usually use MKVs instead of disc backups as the playback method, so I’m not the best to advise on that question.

You will definitely want to spend some time with naming. You can do it pre-rip using the steps described here: Changing names with Expert mode enabled

For BG, I divided them by season, with names like "Battlestar Galactica S1 E01-02.mkv". I also put each season in its own directory, but that's just me.

The 20 Gb titles are the episodes. Rip the ones with chapters, ignore the others.

To match the titles to the correct episode name I use thetvdb and compare things like the writer and director names. Another way to do it is to play the disc in a blu-ray player, selecting the episode from the menu. Play enough so you can identify it, then find the matching title you just ripped.

Just to make sure you get everything:

Use the contents description on the box sleeves to identify which disc has "The Resistance" webisodes. They are all in a single title. (Sorry, I don't remember which disc, but pretty sure it is in Season 3.) The Razor flashbacks are on the same disc as the Razor movie, in the Season 4 box.

A few episodes offer both the aired version and an extended version. Again, use the sleeves to see which ones, and decide if you only want one, or both.

^ Yup, solid advice. Checking the writer and director is also my go-to when the episodes are out of order and lack on screen episode titles, I find it the quickest method (Wikipedia is great for this, if the release doesn’t mention it in a booklet). Watching the start of the episode compared to playing it on a regular player is a good one too.

Looks like read errors. Is your device powered by USB? Do the locations change with different rips?

Those types of errors can appear as the drive spins up past what your USB port can provide power for.
