Have you tried playing it with a "non-official" player, like VLC or Kodi?

Official, licensed players are required to enforce copy protection schemes that non-official players ignore.

Yes, I tried VLC ... the thing is that in general VLC is not a very reliable product, and clearly for this blu-ray it did not work at all, but only half the blu-rays actually work anyway in VLC. Now it is possible they have coded a workaround to deal with this issue, and a good look at VLC code can help as well, because I imagine VLC will have dozens of problems, and any failure is fatal ... I saw the reply from a person that actually works for AnyDVD (or worked at the time, this problem lingers since 2010) that says that this bit twiddling worked by luck and on newer blu-rays it does not work at all.... I thought it would be worth trying anyway because the person who originally posted said had good success with many disks... I understand they wouldn't want to give too many details on the particular blu-ray, but as I said, just an original bjod file and its modification are enough to understand what was done, and these files are usually 1kb or less, so posting the files doesn't seem to be too complicated.

It is a pity that AnyDVD is not available on the Mac, having legally purchased hundreds of DVDs and Blu-rays - never ever downloaded or shared them in my whole life - the price is not an issue here, just don't want to deal with Windows ... argh...

Thanks!

MakeMKV doesn't fix this problem. This is BD+ combined with java code on the bluray ensuring that BD+ is active. Its out of scope for MakeMKV to deal with it. while conceptually it could rewrite the java code, as I said, I believe its out of scope.

If you want to make a full ISO rip with menus you need to rely on products that include that in its scope, namely andvd or dvdfab (I'd reccomend the former, as it does a cleaner job usually).

When going to MKV files, the BD+ protection is removed. Backups... that's another issue.

I understand that in general it cannot be done ... I was just willing to try the bit swapping that setarip_old suggested for my blu-rays, and asking for an example before/after of the bdjo because these files are tiny, in general less than 1k ... As I stated, DVDfab feels more like malware during the tryout, and anydvd is not available on the Mac... at the moment I don't want to install windows in my computer ... thanks ...

Hello,

I believe I may have a solution (more, a “work around”) to this problem.

I,too, have anguished with this “Red Screen” of death.

Mainly, with most of the X-Men Movie Blu Rays (which, I believe is Fox).

I have two work-around’s that have worked for me (as I also use [and love] the FULL back-up option).

Solution#1 - use a Android Media Box to play your FULL BU MakeMKV file.

My Android box (I use a Zidoo) gives the user the option to play either: 1) The Blu Ray Menu, or 2) Just the Video file.

When I choose the option (#2) then it will BYPASS all of the restrictions (like the Red screen, etc.)

The one drawback to this is that it will NOT show all of the [nice] interactive menu options.

But, it’s better than nothing! (At all).

In my experience I have NEVER (so far) seen a 100% [“Perfect”] Blu Ray or 4K Rip (from by MakeMKV, AnyDVD, DVDFab, or even DeUHD [the last was a disaster for me!]).

Note: if anyone knows of something that gives a PERFECT Blu-Ray/4K Rip, then please let me know.

I’ve tried a NUMBER of Android boxes, but very FEW that read all Movie files (like DVD [TS_Video], BDMV, BD-ISO, etc.)

The only ones I’ve researched (that come close) is the Zidoo, eGreat, Dune, and the famous/infamous OPPO players (the last, being/costing worth a MILLION dollars now  )

My Zidoo Android box plays them ALL (all Movie formats, that is).

(And No, I don’t work for Zidoo - just love the product. Had a KD Links, before, but they Dropped-the-Ball, with 4K. And Dunes are [like Oppo] TOO expensive).

The Zidoo box does give you a “striped down” menu, where you can play [any] video file [individually], but that is it.

Until one of you [genius] programmers out there can/will invent a bypass (Java) BD+script, then I believe the only thing available will be a work-around (like this).

Solution #2 - Bypass Blu Ray altogether (and go [strictly] with 4K).

I found that all of the Red Screen movies also [mostly] have an alternate 4K version.

Recently, I noticed that ALL of the 4K versions do NOT have/get this Red Screen bug.

So I have been Ripping all of these movies (the 4K version), and then archiving (dumping) all of these [old/older] problem Blu Ray’s.

This latter option may not be acceptable for Most/All people, but (as I noted), I’m just giving the best [Logical] “Work Around” I can see (and give).

Not very “technical” but (as noted), it’s better than nothing. :)

My 2 Cents

red screen is not a bug. It' working as the code says it should. MakeMKV doesn't modify the code, AnyDVD does. AnyDVD gives perfect rips for the blurays it supports (which is by far most in existence). Plenty of people are using hacked / cracked / warezed versions of anydvd and hence that's why it doesn't work as expected.

Now, there was a major issue with decrypted BD+ discs on the Dune Smart series, but that had little to do with AnyDVD itself and more with BD+ going into undefined areas of the bluray spec and dune not behaving like other bluray players.

namely, after doing the bd+ VM setup, it would jump back to first play title (-1 or 65535). Dune's didn't support that (broke many BluRays, not just BD+ ones). For HDMV titles that did that, AnyDVD put in a fix at my request, but never was confident enough in it to put it in for the java code. Hence, for BD+ titles, one would get a black screen on the Dunes (but they would work fine with most software players that supported BD-J, including modern VLC).

I manually reauthored many blurays to avoid this issue and enable my Dune to get to menus. Was never an issue though with my oppo clone.

Thanks ... I just want to keep a backup of the blu-ray in the computer so I can watch movies without having to load them in the player, and I want to be able to watch all the extras, etc... so generating a mkv file is not an option. Also, my collection of Blurays and DVDs is a bit out of control in terms of size, I just want to store them away instead of keeping prime space in my shelves. After the Gone with The Wind controversy, I lost faith in the ability of streaming services not modifying contents of movies in the future to manipulate the people, so I feel it is crucial to keep these copies as close as possible to the artist's original intention. I have no intention of of making any duplicates, sharing them, recoding for the iPhone, etc. - now playing them in the computer is complicated by the fact that the macs don't have many good player options - so far the best I found was Blu Ray Player Pro from Macgo ... And AnyDVD doesn't work in the Mac... I found MakeMKV the best solution so far to generate a good iso backup on the mac .... ok technically it generates a folder but hdiutil makehybrid -udf -o <iso> <dir> will easily generate 50GB iso files in a matter of a three-four minutes after MakeMKV finish its work ... so far worked on most blu-rays except the Alien Anthology (from 20th fox) that has that problem ...
