Life of Pi fails to copy

Post by geogan »

I have tried two different copies of film discs now to be sure it wasn't a single disc read error. Both completely separate discs give the same error and fail to copy the main movie. Also tried leaving out the DTS-HD track which sometimes works but made no difference. There is nothing wrong with my drive either - it has copied over 500 with no error. And the discs were both in perfect condition - not a scratch on either of them.

The drive can't read the disc. This is not a copy protection issue. Either your drive is failing or your disc is bad.

Take the easy option first and swap the disc for a new one.

Sorry you didn't read what I said carefully. I said I already got a replacement disc - ie. two original Blurays of the film.

And the exact same error above occurs on BOTH copies of the film from the two disc masters in the same sectors. i.e it is NOT an error on an INDIVIDUAL BAD disc copy.

Whatever the problem is, is actually on the disc as it was mastered and being read correctly off disc.

Maybe a new copy protection measure where they put in unreadable or bad sections that are not read during film playback but only during copy operations.

Or a bad run of disc masters all with same read error in exact same sectors on disc? Put there deliberately...

Seeing as your answer was so delightful I'll answer in the same tone.

I'm sorry you can't understand log files. Your drive can't read the disc. I'm on my 5th copy of Monsters Inc 3D from Target. Bad discs are usually pressed in batches. The other choice is that your drive is marginal or failing; either way your drive can't read the disc.

@geogan

Hi!

Will your same Blu-ray drive NOW properly rip any Blu-ray discs thatyou've previously ripped successfully.
Tghe fact that your drive has already been used to rip 500 Blu-ray discs may indicate that it's time for either a cleaning (Maxell makes a cleaning disc that sells for about $10US) or a drive replacement...

Hi,
I too had a problem with life of pi, the first bluray i ever encountered a problem with. Its certainly possible that your drive or disc is bad.

But: try this - it worked for me. Use makemkv to take a backup of the disc. the backup option is in the opening screen. dont check "decrypt" videos. the backup will take a long time.

once the backup is done, open up the index.bdmv within makemkv and try to see if it'll rip completely. this worked perfectly for me, no problems at all in final playback.
