Lincoln

Post by ldoodle »

Hey,

Not sure if this is actually the right forum, as it's not a problem, as such.

Lincoln Region 2 Blu-ray lists half a dozen titles, seemingly the same. Which one should I choose in these scenarios?

Thanks

Half a dozen isn't that many, in today's market. Some of the titles out now have over 100 fake titles on them.

Six suggests something else. Are there two sets of three that have the same length? Some distributors (Disney is one) will put multiple versions with titles and credits changed out for specific languages, leaving the rest of the movie the same. These can be identified by having segment lists that are almost identical, with (usually) the first one or two and last one or two segments different. If there is a "director's cut" version, with English, French, and Spanish audio options, that would be 6 titles.

If you want to find out what is played by a Bluray player, I'd suggest searching for "bluray playlist obfuscation youtube" on your favorite search engine, to watch a technique that works with most disks.

Just checked - there's 7.

6 have a runtime of 2:30:38 and one is 2:30:33. 6 have segment maps in the millions, 1 has a segment map in the hundreds of thousands.

Is that the one I need?

It wasn't the shorter one - that's an interview/introduction with Steven Spielberg.

As I rip with AnyDVD HD first as a folder rip, then rip from the folder rip with MakeMKV, I basically played all the playlists MakeMKV lists in MPC-HC. That led me to 00800.mpls as the one I need.

In Lincoln's case, this is not a trick - all the playlists MakeMKV lists are valid. The only difference is at the very beginning of the film there is on-screen text about the times of slavery in the US. Each playlist just plays this text in a different language. 00800.mpls being the English language one.

I don't have a commercial software player so I can't do the obsfucation trick. Interestingly, VLC played back 00806.mpls which was Czech (I think) language when opening the folder rip as a DVD/BD (rather than choosing the actual playlist). MPC-HC on the other hand selected the proper one (00800.mpls) so MPC-HC is obviously able to check the language based on either its own settings or the locale of the PC, where VLC is not?

Can someone give me an example of a disc that has Screen Pass Protection so I can see how MPC-HC handles it?

Thinking about it, it could be that MPC-HC chooses the first playlist and VLC chooses the last one (because that's how it's turned out).

I just picked a random one when I ripped mine and ended up with one where Spielberg starts the introduction with something like 'Hello Japan' - my guess is that the only difference is which geography is mentioned in the intro. Personally I couldn't be bothered finding the right one and re-ripping, am perfectly happy with my Japan one.
