Time to rip 4K

Post by Daskew78 »

Hi,

What's an average time to RIP a 4K?

I'm currently ripping my first 4K movie with a LG WH14NS40 in an Icy Box IB-550StU3S Enclosure with a very high spec laptop.

It's been ripping with Make MKV now for around 3 hours and still has 1 hour 40 minutes to go.

Is this a normal time-frame? It's around 90GB.

Sometimes I think 4K discs are just upscaled HD masters at massive filesize absolutely on purpose to discourage ripping and no other reason. 90GB per movie is just way too much storage space on hard drives. 20-30GB per Bluray is bad enough. I'm not even going to bother trying to put my 4K discs on server.

That sounds a bit slow. When I rip my 4K movies it can take a bit under an hour for a 60-ish GB file so for 90 GB it would probably take me 1.5 hours in total.

It might be a stupid question, but given your rip time and the fact that you're using a HDD in an enclosure connected to a laptop, I have to ask - are you sure you're connecting it to a USB 3.0 port and not USB 2.0 by any chance? Based on the speed differences between 2.0 and 3.0 your timing would actually make sense for 2.0. Even though your laptop is high spec, it might have some low speed 2.0 ports and some 3.0...?

Hi Guys,

I posted this a while ago now. It appears it was a faulty disk which I had replaced.

I have actually just finished ripping my entire library of 194 4K films just yesterday. A 90GB disk takes around 50 minutes.

Thanks for your replies :)

Hey Dave:

Just out of curiosity, what was the average size of your 4K mkv files after you ripped them?
Mine typically run about 10-15% smaller than the starting size prior to ripping.

Well there's no average as all disks are different sizes to begin with. They come out anywhere between 50GB and 90GB per disk.
