Unable to read 4k discs lately.

Post by Procat »

My wh16ns40 drive suddenly won’t read 4K discs anymore. It reads regular dvd and Blu-ray fine, it doesn’t even see the 4k discs anymore. It’s f/w version 1.02. Tried lens cleaner and reflashing to no avail. At least I have another drive that sees 4k. Also does the newest lg wh16ns40 flash to f/w 1.02. Any help greatly appreciated.

I just bought this drive and flashed it with multiple firmware to be able to read the disks. To no avail non of them have worked. Glad to see that I'm not the only one having the issue which I would really like to see resolved soon.

Question: You use Makemkv and it doesn't read the disc? AnyDVD won't. It only can use "friendly drives". Your drive is not "friendly" but official.

Flash it to ASUS 3.10 MK and check if it doesn't work either.

Repeat laser cleaning and disc cleaning.

After checking all these options I would also be clueless.

Guys,

I was wrong. I thought you have the BH16NS60. If you have the BH16NS40 my information is wrong. However, you need a drive that is BH16NS40 with service code NS50. Please check the label on your drive and respond. W/o service code NS50 your drive is not UHD capable.

My drive had been able to read 4K discs up until a couple of days ago. It just lost the ability to read them lately, makemkv still shows the drive as 1.02, I will try to reflash to the ASUS 3.10 MK and see if that works.

What error are you getting?
Does the drive not read UHD at all like show no disk in the os.
Some are also having problems with sdf and hk downloads

It loads the discs but gets stuck on the decrypting. From memory off the top of my head it stops at “parsing” a file called content something or other. Just hangs there for five or so minutes and then starts returning error messages. Exactly the same thing happened on all the UHD discs that I tried. Hopefully that sounds familiar or I can try again and be more accurate. Everything was fine two weeks ago when I last tried.

Do your previously successful rips work? If so its disk related and down to AACS 2.1.

You need to show us exactly what the MakeMKV window tells you.
Cheers :D

Firstly it was working fine on UHD discs just a few weeks ago. Now does not on any despite me reflashing the firmware, re-downloading MakeMKV and changing my DNS to Google. Still works on Bluray. I've tested on numerous UHD discs I've ripped before.

It takes three minutes to get to :

Parsing: /BDMV/JAR/77001.jar

Thereafter it does not move forward and I start to get hardware errors

MakeMKV v1.14.5 win(x64-release) started
Downloading latest SDF to C:\Users\xxx/.MakeMKV ...
Using direct disc access mode
LibreDrive firmware support is not yet available for this drive (id=F8B3C9080B22)
Failed to load content hash table, unable to verify integrity of M2TS files.
Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:TIMEOUT ON LOGICAL UNIT' occurred while reading 'BD-ROM ASUS BC-12D2HT 3.00' at offset '12490375168'
etc...

I've gone as far 20 minutes and it just continues with the same sort of errors.

bad disk or bad drive
try cleaning both see if it improves i have had success with doing this on brand new drives

OK can't be bad disc since I've tried it on numerous and the same error.

If it is a bad drive I don't understand why it can still rip bluray and DVD just fine?

regular Blurays are mostly single layer BD 25GB and dual layer BD 50GB
UHD Blurays are mostly Dual layer BD 66GB and Triple layer BD 100GB much harder to read
