[SOLVED] The source file '<Unknown>' is corrupt or invalid at offset 5300545536, attempting to work around

Post by Blu-Shield »

Trying to rip a certain Blu-ray Disc (MVM Entertainment's release of A Lull in the Sea), I get messages that "The source file '<Unknown>' is corrupt or invalid at offset 5300545536, attempting to work around". These messages always appear while MakeMKV is ripping the 4th file on the disc (episode 4). The rip nonetheless seems to complete successfully, but I'm wondering if these messages are an indication of a damaged file.

Here are the messages from the MakeMKV bottom window (with "Log debug messages" and "Show AV synchronization messages" turned on):

Code: Select all

Application exited at Wed Nov 6 18:05:10 2019
Testing steps I've tried:
  • Increasing "Read retry count" from 5 (the default) to 25, as per the FAQ (I always set it to 25 - I don't know why this isn't the default)
  • Attempting the rip 3 times (I got the same error messages each time, in the same position)
  • Watching the rip for episode 4 twice (in VLC), alternating between the 2 audio/subtitle tracks, to see if there's any noticeable artefacts. There's a blank chapter at the end of the file, but it doesn't seem like any content is missing from the episode. The same goes for all other episodes from the rip - they've all got the same blank chapter at the end. Other than that, playback seemed perfect.
  • Transcoding episode 4 using Handbrake (it didn't give me any errors)
  • Watching Handbrake's transcode (in VLC), to see if there's any noticeable artefacts. I noticed that (according to VLC) Handbrake's transcode has 3 extra seconds at the end, and lacks the blank chapter at the end - however, I can't watch the extra 3 seconds, as VLC stops playback at that point. Other than that, playback seemed perfect.
  • Transcoding another episode (episode 1) using Handbrake, to see if the phantom 3 seconds would appear there too. The symptoms in episode 1 turned out to be identical to those of episode 4 (i.e. phantom 3 seconds that I can't watch).
Technical details:
  • MakeMKV version: 1.14.5
  • MakeMKV distribution: the Flatpak provided by Flathub
  • Disc product code: MBR7128A
Can anyone enlighten me as to whether these messages, and these phantom chapter / phantom 3 second issues, are something I should be worried about?

A Lull in the Sea should be handled with no issues by MakeMKV; I ripped the original pressing 4 years ago.

The fact that MakeMKV didn't fail the read indicates that it eventually did get a correct read on the sector. MakeMKV won't save the title if the result doesn't match the hash information loaded earlier.
